Korean Dramas!

Redemption is such a powerful theme, especially when used with love. The prospect of a man — or anyone, for that matter — being able to change for love is one of the most thrilling aspects of Korean dramas. There tends to be the existence of a character who begins as a flawed, broken, or supposedly unlovable individual, and then, through the redemptive power of love, is able to change. The journey of redemption in these dramas is not smooth, but the intensity of emotion and character development in these dramas make them unforgettable.

Here are 12 Korean dramas where love not only brings about a change of heart in a man but also provides us with a picture of what it means to be completely redeemed.

1. My Lovely Sam Soon (2005)

My Lovely Sam Soon follows the life of Hyun Jin-heon (Kim Seon-ah), a wealthy but emotionally detached baker, and Kim Sam-soon (Kim Sun-ah), a driven but flawed pastry chef. While Jin-heon appears to be the more sophisticated character initially, his emotional issues and refusal to change for anybody but himself make him a challenging love interest. As time passes, Sam-soon's determination and love gradually break down his defenses, showing that even the most stubborn man can change if someone only believes in him. It's a beautiful portrayal of how self-discovery comes with love.

2. Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014)

Not a romance in the traditional sense, Misaeng is a story of personal redemption against the backdrop of corporate life. The lead character, Jang Geu-rae (Im Si-wan), is a baduk (Go) player turned office worker who struggles to adjust to office life. He meets strict and largely unfriendly colleagues, one of whom, Ahn Young-yi (Kang So-ra), stirs his humanity and leads him through the peaks and valleys in the corporate world. This slow-burning transformation of a man who initially lives a secluded life shows how love — in the form of understanding, patience, and support — can bring about profound change.

3. The King: Eternal Monarch (2020)

In The King: Eternal Monarch, Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho) is a king who initially seems invincible, egotistical, and indifferent to the people around him. All of that changes, however, when he meets Detective Jung Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun). Their connection transcends time and dimensions, and it is through his love for her that Lee Gon learns to prioritize the well-being of others over his own. The drama delves deeply into the theme of redemption through love, showing that even the most powerful figures can transform when they open their hearts.

4. The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012)

During this time of romance, King Lee Hwon (Kim Soo-hyun) begins as a cold and emotionally closed-off king following the death of his first love. But after reuniting with the shaman, Yeon-woo (Han Ga-in), who he believes is the reincarnation of his deceased love, his character drastically changes. His love for her leads him to question his decisions, re-evaluate his reign, and eventually change as a person. This change from a man who is bitter with grief to one who is redeemed by love is the crux of this story.

5. Boys Over Flowers (2009)

Gu Jun-pyo (Lee Min-ho) starts off as a spoiled, arrogant heir to a wealthy family in Boys Over Flowers. He is emotionally immature, often vindictive, and completely unaware of the struggles in the lives of the people around him. However, his encounter with Geum Jan-di (Ku Hye-sun), a kind-hearted and strong-willed girl from a low-income family, opens his eyes to life beyond his privilege. As the days go by, Jun-pyo's love for Jan-di leads him to question his actions and attitudes, setting a great example of personal growth and redemption.

6. Pinocchio (2014-2015)

In Pinocchio, Choi Dal-po (Lee Jong-suk) is a man with a painful past, including a family tragedy brought about by the media's manipulation of the truth. His life takes a total different turn when he begins to fall for In-ha (Park Shin-hye), a woman with a strange condition — an inability to lie. As they fall more in love, Dal-po's own character development from a vengeful man to someone who stands up for justice and truth illustrates how love can lead one to redemption, forgiveness, and healing.

The drama shows how love can heal even the most wounded of hearts.

10. City Hunter (2011)

Lee Yoon-sung (Lee Min-ho) starts off as a revengeful man whose father was wrongly murdered. His life changes when he meets and falls in love with Kim Na-na (Park Min-young), a woman who rattles his convictions regarding right and wrong. Her fierce belief in him and her own sense of justice begin to soften his heart, slowly steering him away from revenge and toward redemption. City Hunter is a wonderful example of how love can be the driving force that compels someone to set things right and combat for justice.
