Bobo’s Cafe in Chappaqua Hosts Brian Carney and his Father’s Honeymooners Memorabilia

A Fun Day at the Train Station in Chappaqua

In the Smithsonian Museum, one can kind find iconic TV props such as Archie Bunker’s Chair, the sign post from MASH and the Lone Ranger’s Mask. So a case could easily be made that Ed Norton’s hat form the Honeymooner’s should also hold an exalted place in our national museum. But the omission actually made the day of Chappaqua’s Eric Goldstein when he stopped into Bobo’s Cafe on Sunday afternoon.

A piece of history, he beamed.”It’s here in Chappaqua today.”

The kudos go to Art’s son Brian Carney for putting the hat on display with his father’s Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe award. “I love seeing the enjoyment people get out of this,” said Carney.

Not the first time the Purdy’s resident has showcased the artifacts, there’s a transformation that keeps him trotting out the memorabilia - especially the hat. “Their whole expression changes,” Carney said. “They just get this happy feeling come over them.’

Bobo’s owner Glen Bernardi was enveloped just as well and extolled appreciation of Brian’s generosity. “Brian is a class act,” said Bernardi.

In return, Carney praised the new locales friendly atmosphere, great food and tasty coffee. But Donna Sherling went a step further in describing the overall flavor of the new coffeeshop at the train station. “The boys and Glen could not be nicer,” said Sherling. “When you’re here, it’s like they are taking you into their family.”

Frankie DellaCamera, who’s a long time friend of Bernardi, found that sentiment in perfect alignment with the celebration. Yes, the show was funny, the Yonkers resident remembered, but the foundation of the 39 episode run was family. “That’s why every show ended with, 'Baby, you’re the greatest,'” he asserted.

DellaCamera also elevated the show for centering on the life of the working man. “Ralph Kramden was a dreamer and never gave up,” he said.

The comedy had a higher purpose in his life too. “In times of crisis, the Honeymooners always brought a smile that made the difficultly times easier,” said DellaCamera.

Far from that today, getting under the hat gave him chills, while posing for a photo warmed him over. “I think I look pretty good, and the green hat matches my sweatsuit,” he joked.

He did come up a little short in the estimation of Janine form Chappaqua, but Frank’s still in good company. “Nobody could wear the hat like Art Carney,” she said.

Maybe not, according to Brian’s girlfriend. “Brian is better looking,” Maggie Giordano playfully assured.

Of course, Art gets the edge on the funny side but she still thinks Brian holds his own. However, Brian’s slapstick doesn’t always do as well in reruns. “Maybe I’m just used to his humor, and the jokes are played out,” she said slyly.

The reruns, on the other hand, never get old and far surpass the Reality TV of today. “Kids are missing the quality and that was real TV,” said Roseanne Yanni of Armonk.

Her sister agreed and made much of how more was made with less. “There were no bells and whistles, and the comedy was simple, innocent and better,” said Toni Yanni.

In the same vane, Bernardi lamented how a whole generation of comedy is going unnoticed by today’s kids. “Good, clean slapstick,” he hoped to provide direction.

That left Marty Apuzzo of Yonkers disheartened to see that younger people don’t know, but he’s ready to raise the flag nonetheless. “It’s our responsibility to show them,” Apuzzo lectured.

So Brian doing his part means a lot, and he makes a pretty good messenger, according to Toni Yanni. “He’s warm, kind, funny and easy to talk to,” she beamed.

Like father, like son.
