American Primeval Ending Explained

The Reasons Behind Their Visit to California

By WHB KHNPublished 12 months ago 5 min read

The heyday of Netflix Sara, Devin, and Two Moons take a startling detour toward the Golden Coast at the finale of the Western television series American Primeval. Netflix launched American Primeval, a new major Western streaming series, on January 9, 2025. The show is set in 1857 in the American West frontier, specifically in the somewhat lawless state of Utah. In a series of gory battles for possession of the newly discovered area, early American immigrants, cults, and indigenous tribes are depicted as murderers and survivors in the dismal, violent, chaotic, and merciless American Primeval.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu co-authored the script for The Revenant with Mark L. Smith, who also penned American Primeval. In actuality, American Primeval and The Revenant share a lot of stylistic elements, both in terms of story and visual approaches. All six of American Primeval's episodes are directed by Peter Berg, who has directed shows like Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor. Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Shea Whigham, Lucas Neff, and Kim Coates are among the ensemble cast members led by Taylor Kitsch. Kitsch's Isaac Reed accomplishes his goal of dying bravely so that he can join his departed family in the afterlife by the end of American Primeval.

Why Devin, Sara, and Two Moons Choose California Over Crooks Springs

Sara has wanted to take Devin to Crooks Springs since the start of American Primeval in order to be with her husband, his father. They seek assistance from Isaac Reed, who keeps them safe throughout the series, and are joined along the road by Two Moons, a Shoshone fugitive. At the end of the series, Sara unexpectedly decided to move to California instead.

Knowing that she would be hunted down relentlessly because of her high bounty, Sara had planned to drop Devin off with his father. She imagines that Isaac might accompany them to California, but he says no. Instead of leaving Devin with his father after his death, Sara decides to move to California and start a new life.

The Reasons Behind Isaac Reed's Death in the Final Days of American Primeval

After his family was killed by robbers, Isaac was living on the streets. Given how much suffering he was still in, he had little left to live for and no incentive to start a new family. When Virgil's resentful brother approaches Sara, Devin, and Two Moons, Isaac saves them again but declines her request to travel to California. Isaac kills him, but he dies from many bullet wounds to the torso. Isaac was going back to a harsh, lonely existence where his only goal was to survive. The only way he could use his life was to die honorably and for a cause greater than himself, and he did so by saving Sara and the children once more.

The Reasons Sara Wanted to Be With Isaac

Given everything Isaac had done for Sara, it is not surprising that she began to feel a romantic and emotional attraction to him. Isaac might have wanted to go with them and go on his newfound mission of protecting Devin and Sara if he hadn't been so devastated. When Devin's leg breaks and he has to ruthlessly heal it, he even adopts a somewhat paternal position toward Devin. She probably couldn't have imagined ever seeing Devin's father again after what Isaac had done.

Why Pratt Shot Abish and Then Killed Himself

Tragically, Pratt began to lose his sense of reality, but he persisted in his search for Abish, whom he eventually locates in one of the most surreal ways conceivable. Pratt shot Abish because he believed she was a member of the Shoshone tribe because she was all decked out in traditional clothes, complete with face paint. Pratt thought he would never be able to deal with killing his wife after realizing what he had done. It is obvious that Pratt was unable to cope with the experience's immediate discomfort and its strange nature.

Fort Bridger's Future Following American Primeval

After offering Jim Bridger an enormous sum of money that he was unable to reject, Brigham Young ultimately gets what he wants from Bridger. Young disclosed that he only intended to buy the fort in order to fully destroy it by fire, which would restrict the amount of transportation that strangers from the east might use to get to the region. In the absence of Fort Bridger, visitors visiting Salt Lake City from Wyoming would be forced to meet Young and his Mormon adherents, who would then attempt to convert them to their faith. Additionally, Washington found it more difficult to deploy military forces to challenge Young's conception of America once Fort Bridger was destroyed.

Following the end of American Primeval, Brigham Young and the Utah War

President James Buchanan's deployment of military forces to the Utah Territory after the American Primeval events unnerved Young and his Church of Latter-day Saints, who prepared for war. The Mormons barred U.S. troops from entering Salt Lake City and took steps to keep them from receiving supplies in Utah. Even unarmed immigrants were slaughtered by the terrified Mormon militia, who also claimed that some of them were American government agents. Approximately 150 persons were thought to have died during the Utah War, which ended with Brigham Young replacing Alfred Cumming as governor of Utah and the Latter-day Saints being pardoned by the president.

The True Significance Of American Primeval

A comparatively pleasant ending covers for the brutality of American Primeval. Sara leaves for what should be a comfortable life in California, even if she may not have deserved it given her many mistakes that almost lost Isaac and her kid their lives. Isaac is a tragic martyr in the story since none of his heroic deeds necessarily improve his status. While Berger demonstrates that every person has a cost, Abish and Pratt's story ends with both of them dead and no longer believing in the Mormon faith. Another illustration of the archaic mindsets that permeate American primeval society is Lt. Pepper's heinous betrayal of his fellow soldiers.

Is Season 2 of American Primeval Coming?

As of right now, a second season of American Primeval has not been confirmed. It is quite doubtful that a second season will be produced because it is designated as a limited series and several of the main characters die in the end. More of the previously stated Utah War and Brigham Young's last days as governor of Utah would probably be covered in any upcoming second season. Additionally, it might show Sara, Devin, and Two Moons moving to California to start over, which might provide a whole new set of risks if American Primeval were to go on.
