'Agatha All Along': Why Agatha's Surprisingly Civil Reaction To Billy Makes Sense
Reluctant allies.

WARNING! SPOILERS for Agatha All Along eps 1-6
While there have been a few red herrings and misdirects along the way, viewers of Agatha All Along were, for the most part, relatively unsurprised by the reveal that Joe Locke's mysterious 'Teen' character is actually Billy Maximoff, the son of the supposedly late Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff. What they have been somewhat surprised by is Agatha's reaction to the reveal.
Agatha has expressed a clear dislike for Wanda, blaming the Scarlet Witch for her current powerless state following the events of WandaVision. She even spits on the foundation of Wanda's house after passing by it in the early episodes of Agatha All Along. Therefore, many fans had expected Agatha to be upset or angry when the Teen was revealed as Wanda's son, and not her own lost boy, Nicholas, as teased in early episodes.
Instead, Agatha's first interaction with Billy after the truth comes out is surprisingly cordial, and she seems to have no problem continuing down the Road with him.. in fact, it is Billy who expresses doubts. While seemingly surprising, there are actually some good reasons why Agatha tried to remain civil w2ith Billy.
Agatha respects Power
Agatha Harkness is somewhat arrogant, self-serving, and holds relatively little regard for others' wellbeing. However, she has been shown to respect the power and knowledge of others when she sees it. While she taunts Wanda throughout episodes eight and nine of WandaVision, deeming her unworthy of the power she possesses, she is humbled by her defeat at Wanda's hands following her full emergence as the Scarlet Witch, grudgingly impressed by her quick learning and use of Runes. She admits a similar grudging respect for Jennifer Kale's potions knowledge in episode three of Agatha All Along.
Agatha's thoughts regarding Billy may be somewhat similar. Being Wanda's son, Agatha now knows Billy, like Alice, is a blood witch, meaning that his abilities are at least partially inherited from his very powerful Mother. Billy also showed strategic thinking by not blasting Agatha with his magic directly, instead using Lilia and Jen.
Agatha respects the power he holds, even with his lack of control of it, and at this stage of the Road, he is better to have as an ally, however reluctant, than an enemy.
Agatha may see Herself in Billy
When Billy, though wordlessly, seems to express remorse over how he gained his new body, Agatha launches into a rather passionate speech, telling him that he should never be afraid of his talents, or of breaking the rules, as both she, and interestingly, his Mother, have done. These survival instincts are part of what makes him a true Witch.
Agatha appears surprisingly emotional in this sequence, and some fans believe she may actually be projecting, seeing some of herself in Billy. She is offering him the comfort and support that she quite clearly never received from her Mother, Evanora.
She may even be trying to break a generational cycle of witches being forced to hide or feel ashamed of their gifts, by giving Billy permission to be proud of his magic.
She really does need him to continue on the Witches' Road

Agatha All Along establishes in the second episode that a coven is needed to open, and travel, the Witches' Road. This may be a reference to the 2016 Scarlet Witch comic run, in which Wanda enlists the ghost of Agatha Harkness to walk the Witches' Road with her on her journey to save the world's witchcraft, as it is considered highly dangerous to travel the Road alone.
In Agatha All Along, it is also recommended to bring at least one witch of each major skill, to cover the trials.
With Sharon and Alice dead, Jen and Lilia assumed dead, and Rio missing in action, Agatha and Billy are left only with each other. Two trials remain, neither of which are Agatha's specialty.
Billy doesn't have to trust Agatha, or vice versa, but no matter their personal feelings, they will definitely have to rely on each other to survive what is to come. Agatha's cordiality with Billy may have as simple an explanation as knowing now is not the time to put him offside.
We can't wait to see what the series final episodes have in store.
