A "trusted source" says Daniel Goddard might return to 'The Young and the Restless'

The above statement is currently on Daniel Goddard's Facebook page under the "About" section so there is no date. It may have been there for a while, but if it had been then it seems that the handsome Aussie actor would have announced his big news by now. Fans of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS are hoping this might indicate that a recent rumor is true and the popular actor will be returning to his role as Cane Ashby.

There is a report from spoilers at Soap Dirt which says a trusted source has revealed that the beloved soap vet is currently in negotiations with CBS about making a comeback to Genoa City. If true, this will be exciting news for the many fans who were distraught when Cane was written out of the daytime drama show. You can read the details by clicking on the following link.

Cane Ashby left Genoa City in November of 2019 to search for his father Colin Atkinson and also to clear his own name. In one of the craziest storylines to appear on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, Colin was able to steal the billion dollar inheritance that Katherine Chancellor left to her grandson Devon Hamilton. Some Genoa City residents believed Cane was involved in the scam. so he decided to leave town to prove his innocence and bring his dad to justice.

Jill's estranged spouse used the ill-gotten gain in order to make some money of his own and then gave it back. After Atkinson was apprehended, Cane was never mentioned again. Cane is out there, somewhere roaming around with a motherless little boy who would be around 4 years old. At one point, Lily was unable to look at baby Sam because he was the result of the one night he spent with Juliet who died during childbirth. Lily eventually came around and said she wanted to be a mother to the child but the storyline went in a different direction, to the chagrin of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS viewers.

Y&R viewers were angry because they wanted to see Lily's former husband exonerated and return to Genoa City with his son Sam. The powers that be, at CBS, however, seemed determined to remove every trace of Cane from the soap. First Lily divorced him, the twins went off to college, and then the family home was sold. There was also a storyline where Cane and Traci Abbott seemed about to become an item but fans did not like this because of Traci's relationship with Lily. Traci's daughter Coleen and Lily were good friends and Traci was like a mother figure to Lily so hooking her up with Cane was simply not good form.

In addition to the legions of fans who were shocked that Daniel Goddard was treated so badly, Eric Braeden who portrays Victor Newman on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS also weighed in. The cast members were dealing with the untimely death of Kristoff St. John who played Neil Winters in February of 2019. Goddard being let go only added to the complications. Braeden was very outspoken in his desire to see Goddard as well as Doug Davidson, (Paul Williams) who both are fan favorites to return to the show.

Another issue that fans brought up was how the powers that be seemed to be trying to destroy the character of Cane for several years. "Lane" was one of the most popular couples on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and they were basically destroyed. Christel Khalil who portrays Lily went on recurring status for over a year and not long after Goddard was fired, Khalil returned under contract a short time later and now is involved with Billy Abbott.

Cane returning to Genoa City, added to Victoria's constant meddling with Lily and Bily's relationship would certainly be a rating booster. Once upon a time Cane and Vicki kissed so the writers might have them get together which would really shake things up all around. Billy and Lily might find themselves jealous of a "Vane" romance and there would be several directions the storyline could go.

Please keep in mind at this point that all of this is speculation. Daniel Goddard's Facebook post could be alluding to something else. The "trusted CBS source" could be mistaken as leakers have been wrong before. Goddard has always said that he was open to coming back to THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and many fans have continued to reach out to him via social media stating they would love to see Cane return to Genoa City.
