A Journey Through Conneaut Lake Park and Hotel Conneaut
Haunted History and Personal Memories

By Brian Godhard of Cryptid Paranormal LLC
Conneaut Lake Park and Hotel Conneaut hold a special place in my heart. For years, my parents docked their boat at the marina, and my brother and I spent countless summer days exploring the park’s attractions. My father, too, visited the park in his youth with his parents and Siblings. In 2011, my cousin’s wedding at the historic hotel further deepened our family’s connection to this timeless lakeside destination.
But Conneaut Lake Park isn’t just a place of cherished memories—it’s also a location steeped in mystery, history, and ghost stories.
According to Wikipedia contributors (2023), Conneaut Lake Park officially opened its gates in 1892 under the vision of Col. Frank Mantor. Interestingly, even before that, local investor Aron Lynce had purchased land in 1877 to secure space for his boat.
By 1901, the Pittsburgh & Shenango Valley Railroad had taken ownership and rapidly developed the grounds, adding hotels and attractions that fueled its popularity (Wikipedia contributors, 2023). But disaster soon followed: in 1908, a massive fire consumed most of the original structures—a grim foreshadowing of tragedies yet to come.
The most infamous incident came in 1943, when Hotel Conneaut was partially destroyed by another fire. OnlyInYourState Staff (2021) note that local legend speaks of a bride named Elizabeth who perished during the blaze. Guests and staff still report sightings of her spirit wandering the halls. Another entity, known only as “Nick,” has also been encountered, though no one knows his true identity (OnlyInYourState Staff, 2021).
Fires continued to haunt the park into the modern era. Multiple blazes in 2008 destroyed several buildings, and in 2013, flames claimed the beloved Beach Club, once a hub of music and nightlife (Wikipedia contributors, 2023). To me, that fire felt like the beginning of the park’s decline. Even more heartbreaking was the 2022 incident when a controlled burn spread to the iconic Blue Streak roller coaster, built in 1938 and considered one of the oldest wooden coasters in the country (Wikipedia contributors, 2023). Watching it vanish was like seeing a piece of Americana (and my childhood) erased.
Ghost hunters and paranormal shows have long been drawn to the hotel. In fact, Times Online Staff (2021) reported that Ghost Nation filmed its episode “Do Not Disturb” there in the fall of 2021, airing the following year.
I’ve been staying at Hotel Conneaut for over 20 years. Every time I step inside, it feels like traveling back in time—the grand staircase, the creaky wooden floors, the vintage décor whispering with stories. Though the hotel has a reputation for being haunted, I’ve never personally witnessed anything supernatural. Once, I even “borrowed” a forgotten set of keys and slipped into a closed-off wing, hoping for an encounter. Still, nothing. I don’t doubt the stories others tell; I just think I haven’t been in the right place at the right time.
Despite all its setbacks, Hotel Conneaut still welcomes guests today. Whether you’re a history buff, a paranormal investigator, or simply curious, it offers a rare glimpse of preserved Americana. As for me, I plan to return later this year, this time with ghost-hunting equipment in hand. Who knows? Maybe next time the spirits will be ready for their close-up.
