1923 Season 2 Episode 5 Ending Explained

The Cliffhanger Shoot Out: Who Won?

By WHB KHNPublished 10 months ago 4 min read

Among the many questions viewers may have regarding the events of 1923 season 2, episode 5 is that it ends on a major cliffhanger with gunshots fired. The plot of 1923 season 2 has centered on Spencer and Alex's individual treks to Montana, where they encounter horrifying dangers. Donald Whitfield and Banner Creighton have been waiting for the ideal opportunity to attack, but winter has postponed the war and struggle for control of the Dutton ranch. Now that winter is over and time is running out, Spencer has a limited amount of time to go back home and defend his family.

Since there were several ongoing stories in 1923, the main focus of episode 5 was on Spencer, Alex, and Teonna Rainwater—all of whom lived far from the ranch. Although the Yellowstone prequel is set on the same ranch as the original series, the plot has expanded well beyond Montana to include Africa and Europe. But with three episodes left in the season—and possibly the entire series—everything is coming together for a dramatic conclusion, where all of the characters are finally brought together. All of its components kept moving forward in Episode 5.

Season 2, Episode 5: Marshal Kent and Pete Shoot at Each Other

Teonna Rainwater has been pursued by the frightful pair of Father Renaud and Marshal Kent from Montana all the way down to West Texas. After seeing "Wanted" posters strewn all over Texas in episode 4, promising a reward for her capture, we've finally seen her assailants close in. They caught up to Pete Plenty Clouds, anyway. However, they first met Anders, the cowboy played by C. Thomas Howell in The Outsiders, with whom Teonna and her friends had become friends.

Both Renaud and Kent try to persuade Anders to divulge information, but he is dubious of their portrayals of Teonna, claiming he doesn't think she is the murderous killer they are portraying her as. They eventually locate Pete after Renaud persuades Anders to take them north of his ranch. Following a quick horseback chase, Pete falls to the ground and gets ready to shoot Marshal Kent. Since Pete is outnumbered and without a horse, it seems doubtful that he would survive, but the episode ends before we can see if either of them was struck.

An explanation of Alex's conflict during her train ride to Chicago

Alex is genuinely unable to get a break. She had a terrible time at Ellis Island, a terrible time at Grand Central Station, and now a terrible time on the train to Chicago. Since she had lost her money to the thief in New York City, Alex offered to trade work services for food while on board. After one of the passengers sexually assaults her, she has to touch him after spilling coffee on his lap, and the following day, she is touched while pouring him coffee.

The man's unsettling behavior will probably reinforce the show's criticism for Alex's ongoing abuse. Although each of these incidents is moving and worthy of investigation, taken as a whole, they are getting harder to watch and a little more unbelievable. In episode 5, Alex is finally pushed over the edge and lashes out at the man after being touched. After splashing his lap with steaming hot liquid, she starts beating his head with the teapot, leaving him enraged and covered in blood.

Naturally, the conductor believes the man and has her arrested instead of believing Alex. This might have been the end of Alex's line if a kind British couple hadn't witnessed the assault. Fortunately, they attest to her, and as a result, her attacker is arrested when they get to Chicago. After learning that the train to Fargo has been cancelled, Alex accepts the offer of traveling with her new British friends. She has been assaulted in some way for three episodes; hopefully, this will be the last one.

Why The Texas Sheriff Wanted Spencer Arrested

At least Spencer gets a break at last, but Alex never does. Marshal Mamie Fossett finds him in Episode 5 and assumes that, because they are both from Montana, he is somehow related to Teonna Rainwater. The possibility of Spencer and Teonna meeting, which had long been expected given the Dutton and Rainwater connections in Yellowstone's conclusion, is then eliminated when he is brought into the police station before being sent on a train back to Montana.

Spencer chats with Sheriff William McDowell, whom we know from Montana, prior to departing for his train. The sheriff cautions Spencer against going back to his house and inciting violence when he inquires as to whether the men who have been threatening his family's ranch are still active. When Spencer refuses to back down, McDowell causes Fossett to arrest him. Marshal Fossett, however, declares that she will not detain Spencer for crimes that he has not yet committed. Sheriff McDowell wants to keep the war from starting in his area, but Spencer is correct when he says that the enemies of the Dutton family have already initiated it.

Will Episode 6 See Spencer & Alex Arrive in Montana?

After 1923 season 2, episode 5, the main question that viewers will still have is when the two will eventually get back together in Montana. Throughout season 2, viewers have been deprived of their chemistry, which was one of the most entertaining aspects of season 1. There are only three episodes left to see them all together if the show is still scheduled to conclude after season two. Given everything they've been through, it may feel more earned, but the delays are starting to seem more like unnecessary stalling than a difficult journey.

It doesn't seem likely that they will both make it to Montana in episode 6 at the rate they've been traveling. Since she doesn't have a way to get that far west, Alex is still in Chicago. Spencer is more likely to show up in the upcoming episode because he is traveling by train. This might entail starting the war practically right away, so when Alex first arrives in Montana, she will see it as a war zone. It will be interesting to watch how 1923 develops with three episodes left.
