New!

Vocal Aspire 2 is a new group on Facebook for Writers to read each other's work and support each other. Networking hand in hand is the best way to make friends and make the platform even more worthwhile as our efforts. Each piece of writing is an achievement to share and is appreciated here.

Adding to the already popular unofficial writers' challenges, here is a new one! A quarterly Unofficial Writer's Challenge, starting with one for Hallowe'en.

Vocal Aspire 2 Halloween Humour

It's almost Autumn and I am already in the mood for Halloween candy! Checking out costumes online in between hunts for Fall Fairs while still wearing shorts and t-shirts. Yet, my mind moves forward with the clock.

Call for entries for the witty, sarcastic, cutesy, charming, bold, fantastical, silly, slapstick, borderline belligerent, and basically, anything goes as long as even one sentence brings a smile to the reader's face. Adding a touch of scary, and the fine art of spooky is great but no gore or horror. The art of writing for effect is important, not so much shock value. I know there are some awesome, and incredible horror writers on Vocal but, hey, I'm a psychic medium and I just don't do the terrifying or queasy in literature and I'll be the one reading all the entries so in the spirit of keeping it fun cheers to the writing endeavour.

So, the writer's challenge is to impart amusement in the Hallowe'en theme. Dress up your characters and add as many ghosts or haunted castles as you wish.

Brighten up the Halloween night with some fun and a 5 dollar Tip for Top Prize, 2nd and 3rd get 2 dollars each. 600 maximum word count. Deadline: October 30.

Post your entries here in the Comments section of this story.

Writer's Prompts

These are just a suggestion to inspire creativity. Include the phrase or not, or consider it part of the theme. These are ideas for prompts to build a story around, just add some humour.

  • The world according to ghosts
  • The gruesome twosome
  • The nighttime picnic basket grew some legs
  • The derelict spinster cast a spell that did the opposite
  • Rousing down the house with haunted, laughing, leaves
  • Trickster's beware
  • The cop, the witch, and the talking wardrobe (or any costume you can think of)
  • The fantastical four robots in costume
  • Circus freaks unleashed on the streets
  • The trick-or-treaters that never leave
  • The dirty dozen pick a pair of masks
  • The misfit psychic lost her clues
  • The winds whispered "hallyboo"

The Fun Part of Halloween

This part has nothing to do with the Writer's Challenge but here are some interesting facts about Halloween.

  • Halloween began in Europe.
  • Before pumpkins, people carved turnips.
  • People have been wearing costumes for centuries.
  • Tricks came before treats.
  • Candy was introduced to the holiday to avoid vandalism.

Halloween originally started in Europe and was called Samhain, pronounced Sowen. Going back hundreds of years, it was designed to be a post-fall equinox celebration for kids to understand the world of spirits in honour of the change of season, as the time of year when spirits move on before winter's arrival. The idea was fond memories of a fun night and children could enjoy candy into the winter months when recreation had to move indoors and out of the cold. How it evolved to a night filled with horror or why children needed to be taught about ghosts, I have no idea. But, for this writing challenge think of all the fun.

I joined the group recently 😁 I think the equinox used to be thought of as a time when the veil was thin, and you could talk to dead loved ones. But another side effect was that evil spirits could get through, so the idea was to copy them, or possibly one-up them to scare them off. This is just something I heard and I've no idea how true it is 😂

Some intriguing prompts here. Maybe I can clear out some cobwebs. Or maybe add some...
