For The Vocal "You Were Never Really Here" Challenge

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published 7 months ago 3 min read
A Nightcafe Creation By The AUthor

There was once a Writer on the platform, but they are no longer here. They set examples, produced excellent work, stood up for others and helped them, and told everyone what a great place it was to be, attracting many new platform users.

Many people continually said what an amazing person The Writer was and thanked them for everything they did, even just being there.

The Writer took pride in their work and was continually eulogised off-platform for their excellent creations.

However, The Writer was either shunned or ignored by the platform and most members. This started to take a toll on their mental health, but they soldiered on.

The Writer was always a shoulder to lean on for those who needed it, but they felt that they could not share how they felt with any other person for fear of upsetting anyone, and day by day, their mental health deteriorated, and they felt more and more out of every social circle.

They loved being here, but every day they felt as though they were outside looking in. They also know that if they walked away, many would miss them and things would fall apart in so many places when they were gone. They also felt they would be blamed for leaving; people would say,

"Why didn't they talk to us?"

The Writer had tried and tried time and time again, and nothing changed.

Self-preservation was the most important thing, and that was one thing that they told everyone, "Put Yourself First", and so they decided to take their own advice and walk away.

Then The Writer was gone.

No one noticed at first.

People assumed The Writer was taking a break, or a time out, but no one was too concerned. Things like this happened all the time, and they had in the past.

But the days turned into months, and then people started to get worried and ask the questions they should have asked a long time ago.

"Is anyone in contact with The Writer, email, phone, WhatsApp? They aren't on Facebook, and they have disappeared from the platform. Their profile and stories are not there any more"

No one had any way of contacting The Writer because although they followed them on the platform and were friends on Facebook, they had never spoken to them except when they needed something or needed support.

It was like the sun had gone out.

The one who had always been there was no longer there, and no one knew what had happened.

Suddenly, people actually talked about The Writer; they wrote stories about how they had helped and about the stories that were no longer there.

The platform was petitioned to restore the works, but they said that they could not, as all the stories had been deleted permanently following a request from The Writer.

That meant the platform knew who The Writer was, but they said that they only contacted each other through email, and that email was now deactivated. Someone suggested contacting the email host, but the reality was that The Writer was gone and did not want to be contacted.

Gradually, life for them resumed, and it was like The Writer had never existed.

Everyone forgot about The Writer because they had their own lives to get on with.

Meanwhile, The Writer was in another world, leading an unpressured life and feeling appreciated and loved where they were. They know that they would never return, but that is sometimes the way that things turn out.

Life was good now, and there was a simple road that ran to the future for The Writer.

If you left, Mike, I would track you down, and one day, your phone would ring or you'd open your mailbox, and there I'd be either on the phone or in a letter. Telling you off for leaving like that. :( Because I would notice if you left and deleted any of your social media accounts.

A great story, Mike. So true of many cases where we don't know what we have until it is gone, and then sadly, in so many cases, it is too late.

  • And life goes on..., ...or it doesn't. Either way, nature & people have a way of filling in any gaps we leave behind. That having been said, please don't leave, Mike.

Gosh there have been so many phenomenal writers that have just disappeared. Hope you’re staying.

Well said, Mike. I have sometimes wondered about some of our friends that were here when I started, but not any more.

Point well made. The community would immediately notice your absence, I can tell, since you stuck out as a leader here when I dragged myself back around. The arts are a thankless field. Everyone wants to ceaselessly consume, but thinks very little about the physical and mental cost of their media.

If you leave, I leave... Please don't leave. That would be a huge blow to the platform.

I agree with Dharrsheena Mike please don't leave. I believe we started writing here about the same time, and I really like your posts especially what I call virtual field trips.

  • Please don't ever leave, Mike. Vocal wouldn't be Vocal without you 😭😭😭😭😭😭
