Apprevution
“The novelty will wear off anywhere” he said one day. I had been longing to live anywhere but here for as long as I could remember. The dull, red bricks and boxy bushes of privet lining rows of suburban houses, contrasted against a perpetually grey sky.

Thorns and Beating Hearts
Once upon a time, in the city of Thorn, there was a young man named Karsen who lived in a tower. He was not imprisoned in the spire of stone, though within it he often felt trapped. He was a Crown Prince, of a mountainous and forest filled kingdom called Alnorac. There was no looming threat of war, no curse from a warty old wizard, and yet the prince felt like there was something he was missing. He would stare into the shadowy mirror hung on the wall while pondering this, and sometimes it seemed like it stared back. And then, he found that missing thing at the festival.

The Giveaway
This is for Paul Stewart's Unnerve, Unsettle, and Scare Me Challenge The day had finally arrived. Paul was giddy with anticipation as the door to the candy factory slowly opened. He and ninety-nine other, equally giddy children pressed forward into the large lobby and blinked as their eyes adjusted to the brightness. At the far end of the room, a neatly dressed young woman behind a large desk stared at the mob of rug rats.

Roulette
This is for Paul Stewart's Unnerve, Unsettle, and Scare Me Challenge, linked here: I was still a little drunk when I got off the bus, full of bottled confidence, bolstered by camaraderie. It had been a good night. We’d talked and laughed, danced a little, and sat shoulder to shoulder in the humid fug of the club, knowing ourselves to be radiant and ripe with power. I had promised I would get a taxi, but I knew I was going to walk. I wanted to walk, to feel the night and the strength in my legs. Plus, it was ridiculous to get a taxi for less than a mile. That dick on the bus wasn’t going to push me around, sitting there, staring at me. Touching himself under his coat I think. Fuck him. I should be able to walk where I want to walk. Shouldn’t have to be afraid.

Night Shift at the Fauxfillment Center. Runner-Up in the Under a Spell Challenge.
“Break the belts, grind the gears, this is what corporate fears. Stop the line for a time, through our will by our design.” It was well past midnight and the candles had burned low when the women assembled in Donna’s living room finished chanting and gazed down collectively at the sheet of paper on the floor. Though the presence that had arrived during the ritual did not remain once the lights were turned on, they all agreed that they felt a sense of fulfillment. Anna pointed out the irony as she poured herself another margarita.

Bodies of bone and blood
Jane sat in the Psychiatrist's office and listened as he prattled on about different personalities. Dr Largos had no idea what he was talking about, she was Jane, there was nobody else living inside her head. How dare he suggest such an utterly crazy thing. Did that kind of thing even exist. Pshaw, she wished the session would end so she could return to her beloved job as 'waitperson', serving drinks at the club. Jane really enjoyed mixing all the lovely types of drinks and cocktails, she even has one named after herself. "Jane the Lovely". The fellows really enjoyed the taste of her special mix.
