Pertation in her Bones
Pertation, noun: the overwhelming sense of belonging and contentedness felt when surrounded by those with a shared passion.
Sure, she could play the music at home; pump it at full volume and let it bounce off the walls of her lonely apartment. Nobody would be coming over to interrupt her.
Or, she could blast it through her hundred dollar headphones while sitting at her cubicle. She didn't fit in with her coworkers anyway; there was nobody coming to chat with her.
In the car she could crank it up as loud as she wanted as she drove to and from her errands. The front seat adjacent to her was perpetually empty, no passengers to whine about the volume.
She could do all these things, and she did.
And yet...nothing compared to listening to the music live. The venues were usually small and cramped, with sticky floors and overpriced drinks. Ancient speakers spat the noise out at concerning volumes. She'd get stuck in a sea of people taller than her, blocking the view of the stage and holding her prisoner until the last song.
But she loved every second. She may come through the door her typical loner self, but she'd immediately find herself surrounded by a group of new best friends. They were bound by their shared love of the music, and for ninety minutes they'd collectively forget their problems and just lose themselves to the sound. Tired feet and sweat did nothing to dampen the feeling of pertation she felt deep in her soul at each concert.
Recorded songs just didn't resonate the same way.

Congratulations on achieving top story status!
Very relatable piece with a resonance of a visceral feeling
I love the inclusive nature of the concerts and shared experience, and the way you subtly balanced it by the loner life style.
I'm not a fan of concerts but it's such a wonderful feeling to find friends who share the same passion! Loved your word and story!
