The Visible Ghost

They are the ones on the escalator in front of you, you don't know who they are but they stop you from walking quicker. You see them on street corners, but you forget about them when you have passed.

Seldom touching anyone but you know there may be a darkness there. They are always alone although often in the crowds in the city centre. They are the reason you cannot find a solo seat on the bus or train.

Though they make up the crowds, they are often seen alone, a visible ghost on a lonely road.

When you come home they are gone, although you may see them walking past your window.

Do they have homes to go to or do they wait all night under railway bridges or in derelict buildings? Do they wander into the woods and become the ones that tales are told about to scare the nervous and anxious ones, even the children?

The visible ghost is always there, they are the reason dogs bark and cats hiss, but you look and there is no one there, but the cats and dogs saw them.

They are the ones who you think are following you on a dark walk home, but you look and there is nobody there, but you know you have seen them, or seen something.

On the crowded train platform, they are the ones looking at you, taking an interest in you. Why are they doing that, do they know you? You are disturbed momentarily, but you get on your way and when you get to where you work, or back home then you feel safer and The Visible Ghost has vanished into the ether.

Did The Visible Ghost hold a door open for you, say sorry when they bumped into you or ask for directions? No, you would have remembered any of those events, and The Visible Ghosts is gone before it leaves any impression on you.

The Visible Ghost is ever present, when you see it, it does increase your anxiety, but it is then gone, leaving you feeling disconcerted and wondering why.

Does The Visible Ghost exist on this mortal plane or are they a figment of your imagination?

On every park path, every railway platform, at every bus top, in every queue, The Visible Ghost is always there but no one sees them, but they know not that they are unseen.

Are they supernatural, are they evil or are they good? No one will ever know because they are not even noticed by anyone, but they are always there.

The only memory that we have of Visible Ghosts is "Did I see someone? Was there someone there?" They do raise questions, but they are always a mystery.

The Visible Ghost is an unsolvable mystery, no one can explain them although everyone sees them. Every day they always fade though, and no one is any the wiser.
