The Tortured Hulls of Goodwin Sands
Tuesday 27th May, Day/Story #6
There's a place, just off the coast of Kent, England, where ships go to die.
Clever people have wondered: why do so many shipwrecks happen here? They ponder about the tricky weather smack in a prime trade route. Surely thinking of all those ships... ancient, and less ancient... creaking and groaning, and rattling their tortured chains on the sea bed...
The first several tragedies were probably mundane, inasmuch as any catastrophe can be. There comes a time when death acts like gravity. Just as mass attracts mass, so too death attracts death... when you have enough of it.
Think of it like a vortex, sucking down the souls of ships. The loss of the lives of men and women is purely coincidental.
One of them paces, leaving no footprints, holding aloft his broken lantern. He is the Darkhouse Keeper. He oversees the vortex, although it would do what it does whether he did or not.
The surface is churning again, whipped to dangerous peaks by a stiff wind. He lifts his lantern higher and trudges on. Forever.

Such an interesting story with the Godwin Sands as a center point. <3 Have you considered making this into more?
This is so interesting. I'm going to Google more!
Love the idea of the darkhouse keeper. It is weird how certain areas seem to be more treacherous for no good reason. Great writing LC.
I am Googling this now as I love tidbits of information like this, although, I hope the lantern holder isn't real haha. Thank you for sharing :D
Oh wow, I've never heard of this. Sure is terrifying. Loved your story!
Knowing this tale is based on some truth makes it that much better. Love the feel to it, haunting.
oh love it when a story is grounded in truths! small edit note, there's a why in need of its h!
And now we must clamour for the legend of the darkhouse keeper! You set a very eerie atmosphere
Like the Cape of Good Hope around South Africa where every breeze breathes peril.
I loved reading this. Its amazing how tragedies and adventures can bring stories to life, and I love the way in which you have used your imagination in this one.
