A Dark Tale

The Messengers of Midnight stood on the hill outside the village, and in every front room hung a painting of them.
The village was deserted.
No one knew when the Messengers of Midnight first came. They were stone statues now but had been living creatures that ossified but were still inhabited by spirits.
The villagers came and asked questions of the statues which were sometimes answered helpfully.
They became figures of worship for everyone in the village, and even the Christian chappel became The Chapel of Midnight. These were the Gods of the village and that is why every house had their picture.
The Messengers of Midnight were steeped in old darkness and over time became resentful of those that questioned them.
When people came to question them, they sowed dissent and turned families against each other. This turned to violence over the tiniest disagreement,
Then there was the first murder, and whole families and neighbours killed each other until no one was left alive in the village.
Today when you walk through this cursed village the bones of the dead are in the houses, rotting and crumbling like the houses themselves.
Life has left this place.
The Messengers of Midnight still watch over the village waiting for one more person for them to turn to Midnight darkness......
