Introduction

I was listening to "Electric Ladyland" by Jimi Hendrix and always thought "The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" was a magical mysterious title for a wonderful song.

This seemed perfect to use for Laura Pruett's "Mummies For Christmas -- Again?" Challenge which you can find out about below:

The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp

December 25th, Christmas Day and we are stuck in Egypt in the desert with a good view of the pyramids.

How did we end up here, well there's the story.

Ever since the plague, almost all of Europe had been decimated, we jumped onto a boat from Greece, just escaping a zombie plague horde (they don't like water, especially salt water) so we sailed off watching them hissing and decomposing.

Landing in Egypt, we found the Nile and tried to come ashore in Cairo but were shunned by the inhabitants many of whom were swathed in bandages looking like mummies. The plague had taken hold here too so we crossed the Nile, came ashore and started across the desert towards the pyramids.

On this side of the river, there were groups of bandaged horrors who followed us but were actually scared off when we lit a torch. As well as being scared of water, these were scared of fire, maybe it was that they knew their bandages would immolate them if they caught fire.

So we're sat in the desert under the pyramids, feeling like the last of humanity burning the midnight lamp to keep the gangs of mummies away as they look at us from a distance.

But we are in the desert, we have no water to drink, and no wood or oil to keep the fires going.

There is no cavalry coming to rescue us, we have no weapons, and we have nowhere to run to.

So we wait.

The midnight lamp has spluttered out and the fire is dying down.

The mummies are coming closer

I don't think we will see the next dawn....

Oh no! This was such a good story. Being ganged up by mummies is crazy. Love the micro-Christmas-horror!
