Unplugged
The old mountain road wound through stunning passages of deep red and white layered rock, under brilliantly colored canopies of deep green pines mixed with soft chartreuse Aspen leaves, and past the soft tinkling cascades of miniature waterfalls. But in the backseat of the old green Jeep that trundled up the road, Hannah and Greg saw none of the landscape. Both had their faces buried deep in their electronic devices and ears blocked by headphones. While, up in the front seat, Joe listened with rapt attention as Tara pointed out different features and regaled him with tales of exploring these mountains as a young girl.

Heroes Among Us
Once upon a time, the gods of old walked the earth. Their power poured onto the earth like rain. Some gods were good, and some were made of mischief or evil. The gods meddled in the lives of humans and humans coped the best they could. People and gods interacted, and the people believed. Heroes rose and fell. Great battles were fought, and the end of the world was stopped by gods and the souls of worthy warriors. Season bled into season, as year by year time flowed by. The gods faded, but never truly went away and they never stopped watching over the world. The gods see. They see everything, but mostly they do nothing. They watch and they wait. There are those, however, who do more, who strive to find the heroes.

The Demotion
I hate this job ... Things would be better if I were in charge. Lucian huffed as he entered the office of the General Operations Director for what felt like the millionth time in the last week. The Boss was half sitting, half leaning on his desk looking through a manilla folder. Without glancing up, he waved to the seat in front of him. With another unsubtle sigh, Lucian sat down in a slump.

The Many Errands of Hercules
Bill “Hercules” Thompson was no longer the same man who earned the nickname, but no one would let him forget it. He had once been a violent man, determined to have his way at work, on the road to work, at hockey games where he tried to forget about work or at any other event where he had to deal with the public. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to forget who he once was. A court case involving an elderly driver, his walking cane, and serious damage to a Honda Civic were enough to have the name stick. And so, he lived his life with as much peace and quiet as he could sustain and stomach.
