Winter's Breath. Runner-Up in The Ritual of Winter Challenge.
You will do it a million times without giving it a moment of your time. Yet, in the winter things change, your exhale has life to it. You watch it disperse, often slowing down to change the shape of the air on exhalation. A simple, yet beautiful distraction during quiet moments. One so profound we notice our surroundings.

Igniting 2024
With the sounds of explosions and loved ones in hand, we cheer and welcome in the new year. There is something repetitive, and strangely unique, about January 1st. It’s a time of celebration of what was and what will be. For many people, the best way to start the new year is by kissing the one they love. Truly, a great way to start the new year. We pair this with resolutions, promises of change to make this year better than the last.

I Promise

It could be just a free fall of 5 seconds, but a life’s worth of memories flood the temporal lobe, overtaking one’s consciousness just before impact. Is it calm or paralyzing? Just a few seconds ago, I was on the bridge with the other first responders. Fear overtakes one man and sends another plummeting. I see my mother’s tears as the cold blue embraces the sedan. Did I make the right choice? What did my mother do to deserve this?

My Savior
There is nothing like an afternoon rain that supports the warm glow of the sun. Clouds dot the sky, but the sun refuses to be hidden. Rays of light shinning through highlighting the rainbow over the hills in the distance. South of the hills stands a church overlooking a graveyard. Here stands a small gathering supporting a mother who is laying her son to rest for the last time. Behind the tombstone a deer mouse glides through the wet grass to join.
