Shadows
For The Vocal "The Shape of the Thing" Challenge

Lost
Darkness
This was where he was. He did not know how he had got there.
It was night, he thought, and there was a mist or fog on these streets making it difficult to see very far.
He thought he saw a shadow of someone or something waiting for him, and he became a little disturbed. What was it? His heart felt like it was made of ice.
He thought he remebered being in hospital and then being injected, maybe to put him out for some reason. Was he ill? Had he been injured?
Not of that mattered because his reality was that he was here now, and he was feeling in danger from the shadow that he thought he had seen. Was it real of was it his imagination, and if he was in his own dream or nightmare what did that make the shadow.
Then he thought he remembered that he was in some kind of restraint before the injection. Was he losing his mind, had he lost it, or had the imaginary shadow stolen it, he did not feel that he was in control, he knew he was not in control.
He felt the shadow was still there waiting to do its worst , whatever that was. He then started to imagine that he was the shadow, a man haunting himself and sending hime mad.
Who would know the best way to push him over the edge than him?
He now realised in these streets there were no lights from windows or from streetlights, although he could see well enough. Then he realised that there was no sound, no birdsong, no wind or traffic noise.
He kept thinking he saw that shadow, but when he looked it was not there.
There had to be a way out, but the thought of the shadow, was messing up his mind.
Every street looked the same, and was in a permanent state of twilight, the sun had neither risen or set in the city of dusk. He suspected that if a rainbeow ever appeared here it would be black, grey and white.
Was there a way out? Maybe the shadow knew, but to find out he would have to catch the shadow, and he was not sure that the shadow even existed.
There was a shudder, he didn't know if it was in his body, is mind or this dark city, but he felt a shudder.
Maybe the shadow, was the angel of death come to claim his sould, but if that were so, why did it not approach him?
This was a mystery that he did not know how to approach.
He had a feeling of unease, he wanted to leave this place, but there was no way out. Not signs, no street names and no one he could ask.
He could walk these streets forwver and nothing would ever change.
Nother shudder, more violent this time, but he still did not know what was happening.
The streets looked the same, nothing changed, and the shadow still lurked, or so he thought.
Bang!!!
He was awake on the operationg table
"We got him back"
"What hapened?"
"We don;t know, we will have to keep looking but your heart stopped for no reason. You have nothing physically wrong with you. We tried CPR but this is the fifth attempt with a defibrillator and it finally restarted your heart. We don't nowmally try this many times but something told us to keep on going."
"I thought I saw a shadow"
"Maybe it was your guardian angel making you keep going"
It may have been an angel or a devil, but he was back in the land of the living, and the imaginary shadow did keep his mind going.
