Biophytes
They Are Coming For Us

biophyte (plural biophytes). (biology) Any plant that obtains nourishment from the bodies of insects (or other once-living organisms).
Biophytes
Genetic Engineering was supposed to make harvests more plentiful, to make plants give more and more.
One thing the scientists hadn't considered was that plants were sentient and resented being forced to give more, and in any transaction, there has to be give and take.
As kids, we all thought that Venus Fly Traps were cool, plat that ate insects.
And the harvests did become more fruitful and plentiful, but then people started noticing some unusual oddities.
There didn't seem to be as many birds singing, and mice and rats seemed to become less common in the countryside.
Not only that the flora in city parks was becoming more luxuriant.
In the cities, pigeons and seagulls became virtually unseen, which made it quieter. Birdsong became a thing of the past.
Seagulls were now only seen on the coast, out at sea.
Then cats and dogs started to disappear. People started to get worried, but no one knew where they were going.
Then, in Central Park, New York a half-consumed human body was found, it was being subsumed into an American Elm. Every plant, bush, and tree in the world had metamorphosed into a biophyte, and that meant that every creature was now fair game for the world's plants.
People were waking to find houseplants on their faces, night suffocation was a favourite method and the houseplants could feed on the cadavers at their leisure.
There had been many scenarios put forward as to how humanity would meet its final demise, but no one had foreseen humanity becoming plant food, although the reality is, when we are buried or cremated our remains become part of the soil that feeds the plants anyway.

This is so creative, I love it!
Hahahahahahahaha night suffocation by the plants, I especially loved that!
This is a very interesting concept. The part about our fascination with Venus Fly Traps really brought the idea to life, and the image of the human body being consumed by the American elm was spine-tingling. Well done.
Great idea and an enjoyable read :)
Interesting concept!
The houseplant bit was pitch perfect
This is great, and entirely believable. Well done.
wow fun story mike!
Hey, it's not impossible! Great story!
How very ingenius and clever!
What a story you have here. Nature's plant world taking over. Frightening, but if this could really happen, I would hope a pine tree would get me. That way I will always have my foliage to keep me warm in the winter.
