.... And My Shadow

For The Vocal Unspoken Challenge

My Shadow

The Prompt

Convey a deep conversation between two individuals without uttering a single word aloud.

This is something that I have never done before, I think it can be considered a monologue so I am not sure if it will be considered for the challenge although there are two entities, close together but never speaking.

The music is "Shadow Play" by Rory Gallagher.

.... And My Shadow

You follow me almost all the time, sometimes in front, sometimes behind.

When the light is there, you are the darkness in my life.

You follow me but you say nothing.

Sometimes we almost touch.

Do we?

Do you touch and feel me? I touch and feel you, I think, but you never listen or speak. You are just there, a part of me apart from me.

The sun, the moon, streetlights, and houselight brighten the place up, but you are the sliver of darkness that is always there.

Do you mean me ill or are you here to watch over me?

I notice when you are absent, although that seldom happens.

Do I lose something when you are not there? Are you a reflection of the darkness in my soul?

I ask you questions all the time but you remain silent, just mimicking my moves but staying on the other side of some strange mirror, a barrier that you will not let me cross.

This is an impasse. In my time on this plane, I have never understood your purpose.

Sometimes you stop me from reading important stuff as you cloak it in darkness, why on earth do you do that?

Are you some evil, dark, mute twin, just looking for the opportunity to do me harm when the right opportunity presents itself?

I always ask you, but you treat me as though I am not there, but if I were not here then neither would you me. You are some kind of projection of my soul or spirit, well that is how I see you when I can.

And you have no fixed shape. You vaguely look like me, but sometimes you are short and sometimes tall, almost like an elastic man, and sometimes you disappear.

You never make a sound, and when you are gone you leave absolutely no trace, but I know you will be back at the first opportunity.

Where are you when I sleep?

Do you follow me into my dreams or do you sleep as well? Do shadows dream? Though I know that is another question that you will never answer.

When I raise my arm you raise yours, as though we are communicating. When I wave you wave back but when I turn around you go behind me, you never keep looking at me, why not?

Am I going mad trying to speak with you?

Do you think that others are the same with their shadows? See I am asking you questions again and you stay silent. If I raise my thumb you do it as well, so does that mean you agree with me and support me, or are you just taking the mickey?

I really don't know.

In this whole attempted conversation we have not exchanged a word. These are just my thoughts about me and you, and how we will probably never be parted but never be that close either.

Are you some reflection of part of me?

I just feel I am repeating myself, but I know that I can never escape you. Does that make me your prisoner? You can see everything that I do.

Are you spying on me for God to see whether I deserve Heaven or Hell?

I know you won't tell me, but I will just have to put up with your presence and silence.
