Hey, Elliott.

Im not doing letters. If I do this right, everyone will think its an accident.

Im making an exception. I can trust you with this, cos your a good friend.

I have to tell you IM SORRY. Im gonna do something. A shitty thing to do to a friend. But I can't see any other way.

Your gonna come down from the English corridor any minute. Im gonna convince you to come out with me tomorrow. Gonna say Ciara will be there, that'll do it.

Wel'l ride our bikes up Whaleback Ridge. I'll wear my dads old helmet. Its bashed up and a bit too big. That should help. I want this to be CLEAN CUT. I don't wanna be hanging around dribbling and whatever. No offence to those folks, but I'm doing this because I want to be gone.

When we get near that bend halfway up, the one with no barrier, I'll slow down and let you get ahead so you won't see what I'm doing. You won't be able to stop me. I'll enjoy the sun and breeze a bit, and then turn the bike and go over the edge. Head first, right on to the rocks. Should be quick. Hope so.

If I go alone, people might suspect I did it on purpose. So your my cover.

If anyone thinks it's your fault, you know, legally, use this letter to get out of it. I, Chester Davies, of sound mind and body yada yada yada. I'm choosing this. It's got nothing to do with you. If I get it right, you wont need to do that.

If it works, if everyone thinks its an accident, please burn this note. My Catholic parents wont understand me doing this. If I disappear, they'll be better off. Happier, even. In the long run. But ONLY if it's an accident. If they know I ended it, I dont know how they'll live with that.

Sorry again. I hope you can forgive me. And thanks, man. In advance. For saying yes. (I know you will.) For being there. Means alot to me. And you know what, I'll enjoy the ride. You. Sun. Breeze. Free.

Chester

Please do me a favour: Leave a comment and let me know whether you read Bend in the Road first or not! I'm interested how it lands differently. I love it when people leave comments, because it makes it easier to reciprocate the read.

A Year of Stories: I'm writing a story every day this year. This one continues my 224 day streak since 1st January.

Please consider lending your support to the other creators on this madcap "a story every day" adventure. They're putting out excellent content every day!

The story behind the story: I wanted to do another epistolary style piece, but this time, not involving computers. I hadn't done that in a while. I wrote this one to go with Bend in the Road. I finished this immediately after writing that one. A few people commented asking whether we get to see the note, so happy days!

Thank you again!

Especially if you are one of the wonderful people who has been staunchly reading these daily scribbles since the start of the year. I see you, and appreciate you very much indeed!

If you enjoyed this one, the very best compliment you can give me is to share it, or read another!

Oof, this was so painful to read! You wrote it so well though, LC!

What a horrid thing to find after the fact. But, choices are our own. Bend in the road was so sad. We never know when people are so depressed what they will do.

Good God. This hit in a way I wasn't expecting.

    Wow! And what Caroline said.

  • Caroline Cravenabout a year ago

Oh no. This made the first story even more powerful and absolutely heart wrenchingly sad. Bloody hell L.C.

  • WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME WOMAN??? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Also the name Chester reminded me of Chester from Linkin Park. He too committed suicide

It's difficult to capture how a person can feel so forlorn that ending their life seems to be the right thing to do, but you did it well, L.C.

Wow. Powerful companion piece to your previous story, Bend in the Road. This piece is very well done.

Holy Shit L.C., you punched me in the gut with this story. There’s still a measure of beauty in it though, despite the sadness. 10/10.

Well-wrought and well-played! And sad, of course. I never could think of it as a sin, really, but suicide definitely leaves an extra welt in the psyche of those left behind which a mere accident might spare them.
