Odd Food Combinations That Just Work

I've had my fair share of odd food combinations over the years, but one of my earliest memories takes me back to when I was just seven. My cousin and I decided to make lunch after school while our great Aunt, a notoriously bad cook, preferred to watch WWE and sip tea. Eager to embark on our culinary adventure, we faced a challenge: limited ingredients and skills.

After much debate and a fierce hunger driving us, we settled on a unique creation: mayonnaise and bread, sprinkled with salt and heated in the microwave for 30 seconds. Thus, 'Salty Bread' was born. I can almost hear your taste buds shaking at the thought, but honestly, it was delicious- a warm, tangy, creamy hug after a tough day of times tables and colouring.

This experience opened my eyes to the world of unexpected flavours. Here are some odd food combinations that just might surprise you.

1. Vanilla Ice-cream and French Fries

This combination is probably the most popular on the list, and for good reason. There's something undeniably delicious about the salty, crispy French fries paired with the sweet creamy ice-cream, especially during the summer. The contrast of flavours creates a unique but delightful taste. Just be prepared for some odd stares at McDonalds but trust me it's a must-try!

    2. Olive Oil and Vanilla Ice-cream

This culinary duo has been trending for quite some time. Start with a gorgeous scoop of vanilla ice-cream and drizzle on some extra virgin olive oil- though regular olive oil works just as well. The oil cuts through the creaminess, adding a strong, earthy umami flavour to an otherwise plain dessert. For an extra edge, sprinkle some flaky sea salt on top. It's a simple twist that might just change the way you think about dessert.

    3. Apple Pie and Cheddar Cheese

There's something oddly satisfying about this pairing. Maybe it's the way you can almost imagine the flavours coming together when you hear about it. A warm, cinnamon-filled apple pie paired with freshly grated cheddar-it's a mouthwatering mix of sweet and savoury. If you're feeling adventurous, throw in a scoop of ice-cream for good measure.

    4. Peanut Butter and Jalapeño

At first glance, this combination may seem unusual, but it makes sense when you think about how many cultures pair peanuts and chilli or fresh peppers. The key is finding the right balance so neither ingredient overpowers the other. You can achieve this by introducing third element, like pita bread or a tortilla. Imagine a delicious wrap with smooth peanut butter, crunchy jalapeño, and a soft pita- it's a surprisingly harmonious mix of flavours and textures.

    5. Cayenne Pepper and Hot Chocolate

I get it- I was skeptical too. Most people like to keep their chillies and chocolate apart, but for those who enjoy the combination like I do, this was something worth trying. However, making it warm was not something I expected to love. But trust me, it's something special. Just be careful not to overdo the cayenne pepper- your stomach won't be as forgiving! Add just enough to tingle your tongue. A rich, velvety hot chocolate with just a hint of spice makes for the perfect, elevated warm beverage.

6. Cheese and Jam on Toast

If you're a charcuterie addict like me, you'll love this quick and simple snack. The balance of creamy cheese and sweet jam hits all the right notes. For something a little diffrent, try swapping the jam with chopped dates for added texture. The combination of crunchy toast, savoury cheese, and a hint of sweetness is the perfect bite-sized treat. Toast your bread until golden, spread your favourite cheese, and top it off with a touch of jam or dates. For an extra twist, add a few nuts or drizzle of honey to elevate the flavours.

There are so many unexpected combinations to try. I'm keen on experimenting more, and I hope I've inspired you to give one of these ago. If you have your very own, please feel free to share a comment down below. I'd love to hear all about your taste-bus shaking pairings.
