When I was eighteen, I was in the peak of my youth and having just been freed from the clasps of school, I packed a bag and lived solo in Cambodia for six months. The first moments that I spent in Cambodia, from stepping off the plane to sitting on the gutter with a lady who had no teeth but the biggest smile eating amok are the clearest in my memory.

Driving For Food
I have always had an interesting relationship with food. It comes from my upbringing. My biggest influences in childhood were my grandparents who were born and raised during the Great Depression. It was a time when it was nothing to spend an entire day searching for and gathering what you needed to make a meal for your family. My childhood is peppered with moments where I remember riding around in the backseat of my Grandmother’s car listening to Public Radio in search of food. She had a store for everything. One store that had the best meat, one store that had the best sweets, one for pantry staples. She poured over coupons and sale papers for deals because we didn’t have much money but that didn’t mean we couldn’t eat well. Traveling for food is ingrained so to speak. This is why I spend my weekends in the car with my husband eating my way across the DMV.

An Argentinian Asado
The gauchos helped us off our horses. Lo siento I said, in my terrible Spanish accent. I wanted to explain my apology was for all the sweat I had dripped on the horse and saddle. Riding a horse for the first time had been significantly more stress-inducing than I expected, not to mention that the gauchos had led us up a fairly steep mountain for our trek here in the Andes.

I will never forget the impact Italy has had on how I experience food. As an American transplant in northern Italy at the ripe old age of 12, I was both delighted and maybe a little overwhelmed when I saw how traditions around food were so deeply entrenched in everyday life and with friends and family there. I remember one Easter in the mountains in the little village of Exilles, Turin. My sister, mother stepfather and I were treated to a 10-course meal (or so it seemed) by relatives of my stepfather’s brother-in law. At first, my sister and I were enthusiastic about all the fragrant dishes being magically sent out of that tiny mountain house kitchen. But then we realized that our eyes were so much bigger than our stomachs, as children do. We both turned to my mother with a look of bewilderment on our faces and almost chimed in unison “When will we be finished Mom?”

If there's any place I daydream about moving to, Portland, Maine is high as hell on the list. Thankfully I'm close enough to take weekend trips to visit friends - and to say the food there is incredible is the biggest understatement. I'm a sucker for a small city with cute shops and unique food, and Portland hits those nails right on the head.
