My review of "MasterChef Canada: Season 2"
How did I get so addicted to this series?

I got into MasterChef Canada late into season 1 of the series. I was excited to see Eric Chong win season 1. I only got to see the last few episodes but it was really exciting as they were creating really crazy dishes in such a short period of time.
Season 2 comes on TV and I started to binge through season 2 as well. This season they have a nice diverse group of cooks from across the country. Some of them were a little more memorable than others.
I would never have thought I would get into this series as I don't really watch cooking shows nevertheless reality cooking competitions. This one worked for me. My girlfriend told me that the American MasterChef is very entertaining but to me this Canadian version got me going for a number of reasons.
This show is apologetically Canadian. They have Canadian judges, Canadian venues and some Canadian dishes. The contestants have an air of familiarity to them because of their Canadian accents and their demeanor. Although, it is fun to see Canadians as cocky as some of the contestants on this show.
I would say that the breakout stars are of course Line, the mother from New Brunswick with such a hard upbringing but was able to overcome all odds. I was rooting for her to the very end. There's the lovable football player Jon. He was a kindhearted player that helped people when they were in times of need. Then there was Jennifer a motormouth that was often overlooked but had a ton of talent under her sleeves.
Then there were characters that I grew to like like Michael. He seemed pompous with his fashionista arrogance but later down the line I started to think this guy was pretty cool. They barely gave any air time to Christopher even though he lasted to close to the end. Maybe he didn't have much personality but it is kind of a slap in the face that he get any air time despite doing well on the show.
There was kind of an obvious winner throughout the season. I won't give it away but this guy pretty much won so many challenges and always came up with some crazy stuff.
It's really nice to see that pretty much all of these chefs were never trained and just learned all of their skills on their own. How the heck were they able to create such crazy dishes?
Another great thing about this season is that you can really see each of the characters bond with one another. They're probably still friends with some of the contestants on the show. I was able to really understand each contestant's train of though and see where they came from as each of the dishes had a little element of themselves in them.
Some of the dishes I wondered if they actually made within the 60 minute time limit that they were allotted. I also questioned whether the judges really did like all of the dishes that they said they did.
One of the more memorable episodes is when they allowed some of the later contestants to see their families and cook the dishes that they would make for their family at home.
Yes the show is a little formulaic but it's really fun to watch. It's like a rags to riches show. Seeing how people from nothing can overcome and create works of art that are delicious and creative.
Overall, I don't really have a reference point to base my score of this season. I would say that this season was able to get me to binge the entire season so that's a great indication of how entertaining it was. I will have to give this season an 8 out of 10. I can't wait to watch the next season of MasterChef Canada. You better believe I will be recommending this season to others that haven't seen it yet.
