When food brings the kid out of you.

Initially, when I think of summer, I think of a beach barbeque. I think of hot dogs, watermelon, pasta salad and even baked beans. As delicious as all of those foods are, they do not bring up the same level of nostalgia. Feelings are important when it comes to describing a food that brings you joy. When the smell, taste or look of a food can send you back down memory lane, it just adds to the satisfaction. The reasons why the foods I listed above do not do that, is because we continue to use them for many occasions outside of a breezy summer barbeque. For instance, Thanksgiving food has all the hype because we typically wait a whole year to eat all those traditional thanksgiving dishes. The wait and the anticipation is why our mouths water every year. This is why I decided to talk about a food that I rarely eat, that is green eggs and ham.

For starters, I should mention I am a full grown adult, but that doesn’t mean I cannot be a kid again. I love food that brings in imagination and adds a layer of fun. The first time I had greens eggs and ham, I was in elementary school at a week long summer camp. To this day, it was the best camp I had ever been to. They had a theme for everything and the fun was non-stop. I was sad when my mom picked me up a day early because she missed me. However, that morning we all were dressed up in our pajamas for a green eggs and ham breakfast. I will never forget all the laughter, singing and dancing that was had that morning.

As time went on, I wanted my life to be like my summer camp experience. So my mom and I would have special green eggs and ham days. It was so fun learning how to cook and using the green dye in the egg yolk. I know it may not be the most attractive dish ever but the green eggs never bothered me. Making this dish turned into somewhat of a tradition where we would do this once a year during summer. We would even read green eggs and ham together and laugh about how silly we were. As I grew older, we still kept the same tradition going because we loved being big kids. I also loved to reminisce about that camp experience. Every year, I would tell my mom how I missed zip lining for the first time because she picked me up early. It’s one of those stories I never let her forget.

So when I eat green eggs and ham I think of a lot of memories. I think about being at camp where I met some of the coolest friends and shared so many wonderful experiences. I also think about how my mom and I have a tradition that only we have together. I also think about how adventurous I am to make small moments such as breakfast entertaining. These moments are everything and they shaped how I live my life today. I am an adventurous eater and I like to turn everything into an enjoyable experience.

I could talk about how great any typical summertime food dish is. When I was a kid I ate pizza every day for a month because my mom bet me that I would get over it. She was right in the end, but I never gave her the satisfaction of knowing that. For me, green eggs and ham is a special tradition that represents fun, family and summer memories. I still have the book on my bookshelf and my mother and I are overdue for our green eggs and ham day. I am grateful to share my story and summer 2022 we are bring back the mother-daughter green eggs and ham day. Except now, I think I’ll add a mimosa on the side. Cheers!
