About a year ago, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life to become a fruitarian. It was no small and boring feat and I began to discover my actual attachment to how and when I would consume food.
I LOVE food so being cautious about introducing a new style of eating, it was important for me to start slow.
I began incorporating bits of fruit throughout the day before going all fruit. It was actually easier than any other diet I had implemented.
The relaxing transition gave me a new outlook on life. Because it is a super light diet, I have more energy to do things and to put an increasing amount of intention behind them. I am also getting a lot clearer as to who I am and how I cope with situations. This is incredibly significant and relative to me especially being in my thirties.
The way I would engage with people in a social sense, in a business sense, the way I would interact with my family. Fruit allowed me to see the very subtle ways of who I am in all these situations, therefore bettering me so I can have more understanding of my relationships all around. This is the main reason I wanted to discuss fruit as my “unpopular opinion” video, to illustrate just how powerful these types of foods are, but the knowledge is yet still widely unknown.
It is indeed the most important and life-changing subject I can share. The way we eat dictates our experiences throughout our days, our years, our entire life. So of course, it is important to be mindful of HOW we consume so we can all be our best selves for each other.
The shift I started to feel once I really relied on fruit was remarkable. The joy I randomly experience throughout the day, the lax attitude with high creative energy, the ability to act on intuition without thinking too hard. All just smaller examples of the benefits I had reaped from incorporating a fruit-based regimen.
This change, of course, was something I never could have imagined, with challenges, of course, I never would have expected, one mainly being with myself and the other being with my peers.
To begin with, this transition was very unconventional, even for me. As I started getting into the new regimen, I would sometimes have anxiety about my consumption and about the pressure of feeling full because of how light the diet made me feel, an experience I was not used to. So I would start to internalize whether this new commitment I had made would benefit me long term.
With this struggle though, came a new way of thinking. Instead of fighting the anxiety, I allowed it and started to even become friends with it. My mental process completely evolved because of this. I gave myself the permission to feel ok. I was choosing differently FOR myself and for what I responded best to. That in itself was a gamechanger.
Social pressure was something that also came up. Living in an urban city, sharing a meal with someone is something we do on a daily basis without thinking because we base these experiences more on social expression than anything else. I had to start declining going out to eat with friends because I enjoyed eating more naturally and also because quite frankly, I was afraid of what they would think. That’s when the loneliness started to set in too. But like the anxiety, I became friendly with that as well. Through this, I came to understand that the right people will not only stay but they will also support you through your evolution.
This new wave, I can say, has created a life more authentic and personal to me. I live life with less fear and more courage. Therefore, the confidence to share this was something I did not want to take for granted. It was important for me to share with you on a public platform, no matter what the response may be.
I feel it is a true testament to trusting the process and knowing that Mother Nature has your back. After all, fruit was the first food that God provided us.
I hope you enjoy my story and my video.
All my best,
Alexandra Benaim
