Food Creations

Following your heart

By Liesel KippenPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Creating good food is my passion. Whether I’m eating it or cooking it, I enjoy the pleasure of indulging in it, crafting it, designing it, shaping it and moulding it into a tantalizing dish or sight that no one can resist. I enjoy immersing myself in the pleasurable activity of designing my cakes, using deft and skilled movements with my handy tool- my scissors. For me, the scissors is a powerful and useful device, following right behind the invention of sliced bread. Who knows, maybe the idea of sliced bread had its origins with a pair of scissors.

There’s a certain awe and inspiration when grabbing one’s scissors between the thumb and forefinger. A determination and pursuit for excellence follows those deft fingers and with it, an ecstasy, a love and a passion for creativity. How do I create my own happiness….with a pair of scissors, believe it or not! Food designing and crafting is my happy place. It’s my sanctum Santorum. It’s a place where I lose myself in my passion and where my creative and artistic juices begin to flow in and through my veins from the moment I lift my pair of scissors. It’s here where the moment of inspiration and creative thought emerges. Nothing excites me more than designing cake for a loved one, friend or even for myself and my family.

My scissors has become my best friend and soul mate. It’s my tool for creating exciting dishes, intricately profound food displays and wonderfully imaginative cake designs. My kitchen is my workplace and here is where I often revel in reveries about what to create next, what interesting cake to make and what decorations will adorn my finished work. I feel like a Leonardo De Vinci, creating works of art, with artwork in different colours, varied shades and powerfully layered interfaces. While quietly contemplating and pondering over what ingredients will go into my cake, my mind almost immediately drifts to the cutting tasks which will follow shortly afterwards, with my handy implement – the scissors; As thoughts flood my mind, often creating havoc as they intertwine with vast images, designs and thought processes, my eyes quickly settle on my kitchen shear and the robust activity which will follow. While my head buzzes with mindmaps of design procedures and the intricate features that will be displayed on my finished piece, my fingers unconsciously pick up the tool with precise and deft movements, as the trimming, cutting, shaping, smoothing, poking and crafting of the cake, fondant and royal icing begin for my edible masterpieces. My scissors immediately follows suit, with a mind all of its own, as knowing what task needs to be fulfilled even before I’ve fully decided. Sugar arts is my absolute favourite ingredient to use, as it works beautifully with my scissors. Shaping oval roses with the pointed edge of the scissors or trimming the borders of pearl-studded cake bases, or cutting out hearts and flowers to adorn my renowned boob cake, is a sight second to none. The anticipation that follows is almost surreal. The reddish and light brown tones, olive greens and aqua blue, dominant pinks and oyster creams, all sprawl lethargically as edible flowers dominate the cake’s view. These are meticulously snipped and shaped, to produce well-rounded petals, stems and flowers. Sometimes my scissors takes on other forms, while slicing away at slabs of chocolate, and creating a bark effect of think chocolate shaving. These are wonderfully decadent on my chocolate mousse cakes and my chocolate raspberry cheesecakes. As the chocolate piles in a heap of sheer decadence over the raspberries it’s hard not to imagine the powerful tools that worked behind the scenes to create this delectable showstopper of pleasure.
