A sister's grief
My younger brother died unexpectedly on Mother’s Day 2020. My mom called me before I got to the hospital and told me he was gone but that I had to keep it together and stay strong for his wife. Mom wasn’t crying when she told me and her words didn’t sink in, despite having heard them clearly.

My long journey to mother hood
If you read my previous story then you know I’ve had 2 very rough and hard pregnancies after I had Madelyn I had her 2 year old sister Emmalynn who was born with only 30% of her skin and then I had Raelyn who was born with anencephaly and only lived 23 days. I’m currently writing Emmalynns story (The miraculous healing of Emmalynn Upchurch)and I already wrote the short version of Raelyns story but here is there big sister Madelyns story I can’t write about her sisters without writing about her it’s just not fair. I wrote this when she was about 5 years old she will be turning 9 here on Feb 4th 1 day before Raelyns passing. This year will be hard but we will get through this as a family! Anyways here is Madelyns birth story.

Raw Meat vs Medium Rare
Over the past several weeks I have been binge-watching the hit show Master Chef on Hulu. Being a visual learner, this show has enlightened and inspired me to cook meals with more fresh, quality ingredients; to watch my temperatures, measurements, and time more closely; and to cook with love and passion with instinct and sensibility, always making sure my heart & soul are on every perfect plate I compose.

Following My Father
In San Francisco, my parents rented a large flat on Funston Avenue, bordering Park Presidio Boulevard. The only furniture we had were our dining table and chairs, and beds, they pulled out of storage. What might have been a beautiful and comfortable flat had it been furnished and decorated properly, was cold, physically, and for me, emotionally.

Legacy
My Aunt Bea was resolute at my uncle’s funeral. Her black skirt suit pressed and showed no trace of lint with a lilac kerchief in every pocket. She didn’t wear any of the broaches my Uncle Bob had gotten her, nor did she go into the room for the wake. Instead she stayed with my brother and I, in the deep green sitting room downstairs, you could just see the white banister that lead to the viewing room from the couch we were all cuddled on.

I Don't Believe What You Believe
The cool thing is that we should believe different things because we are different people. My world view has been impacted by genetics, nurturing, indoctrination, and inundation. What I believe is the product of my surroundings and the messages I have heard. Even when we see the world from the same perspective, the sum of our experiences changes what we see, how we view it, why it is meaningful, and who is impacted. Over the decades, I have observed members of the same families, same traditions, or same faith groups who imagine that they hold the same beliefs. Still, when questioned, they demonstrate that the truth is more relative than absolute. Our access to information and facts and opinions are at once extraordinarily open and inordinately selective. Bias may be the primary principle in belief.

My little slice of Heaven.
Creating and utilizing a space to improve your emotional health and allow you to relax is an amazing form of self-care. Cozy corners are also a great way to give yourself an area to reflect when you're feeling overwhelmed or “off” from your usual emotions.

Finding Family
Generally genetics equal family. But is it so easily defined? There is much about this subject that is mixed, messy and lovely. Our family often strongly influences the person we grow to become. I want to also acknowledge the extended family members here too.
