When you look at the world today, it's like looking at a madhouse. The world is more connected than ever through the miracle of electronic devices. People, at least in the West, of course, there are exceptions, are living longer, eating better, living in homes, and driving the latest cars. We have iPhones/Android phones, social media, AI, etc.

This society has become greedier and greedier. We are all encouraged to work ourselves to the bone so we can keep our kids happy, to get the latest this or that, to buy a product endorsed by some superstar. We all walk about like zombies. We whizz around like ants, thinking it is a purpose, when in fact, it is no purpose. We think we are happy living this life, but deep down, many are not. Many just wish to run away and unplug, and go back to some idyllic life. Many of us dream of living off-grid, living in nature, as in the programmes presented by English adventurer Ben Fogle. Yes, folks, even to go back to nature and live sustainably, we need cold, hard cash. Even living off-grid requires hard graft, and while some take to it, others can't hack it. Modern life has made us soft.

We are building tech that could replace us. Yes, it's a good thing that it could liberate humans from being wage slaves. But we need something like a Universal Basic Income to free humans. So we can be more spiritual, more creative, do things that make us happy, as long as it does not harm ourselves or others. We should spend more time in nature, look at the night sky, spend time with our pets, with other species, and be with like- minded people. If we were able to do this, I'm sure there would be less mental illness and perhaps even physical illness. People on TV, social media, and our health providers all tell us we should eat and drink healthier. That's well-meaning and all well and good, but have you seen the price of healthy food? If you are on a good salary, buying this food is no problem. However, many on budgets just about keeping their heads above water, healthy food is a rarity or non-existent. Thus such folk can only afford to buy crap processed food. And we wonder why there is obesity? Or illnesses caused by eating the wrong food.

Alcohol addiction, drug addiction, etc, are at an all-time high. Humans are taking in 24 hours and 7 days a week information from screens. Our brains were never meant to be overloaded like this. One part of the planet lives in luxury while another part of the planet can't even feed itself properly. People are hooked on celebs and celeb worship. People are trying to be these people and thinking they will end up like celebs, but most of the time, it is a pipe dream. Everything is louder today, and adults and kids are encouraged to be noisy. Our society is noisy and intrusive, and often it's not a good noise. I live near a main road, and the racket is unbearable. Loud noise, I'm sure, is no good for us long term. I think in the years to come, loud noise will be found to be another cause of illness. The radiation from the electrical and electronic devices we use must be harmful long term, too. Electromagnetic waves or radiation waves from these devices must be harmful.

Humans were and still are tribal creatures. We define ourselves by race, nationality, faith, fashion, music, politics, sexuality, which can be a good thing. But as we are learning through wokeism and the counter-challenge of MAGA, for example, difference can be divisive. Of course, everyone deserves to be represented in ads, movies, and television, but it's getting to the point of being ridiculous. Where Blacks, LGBTQ, bearded people, people in mixed race relationships, are represented to saturation point. To the point of excluding white people, even groups like Goths. How can equality and diversity be that when it focuses on certain groups and neglects others?

Humans, whether we acknowledge it or not, are animals, primates, apes. We like to think we are not animals, but our DNA links to chimps, gorillas, orangutans, and bonobos. Humans are creatures of nature, just like every other species on this planet. So, to say humans are not animals is scientifically incorrect. We try to raise ourselves above everything else in nature. It's like a species apartheid as we falsely divide ourselves and other species, when in fact we are all connected. Humans and other species can have beautiful relationships as we acknowledge and respect them. But humans treat animals on the whole, awfully. We farm them and eat them, we race them to death, we hunt them, we deprive them of their habitat, where they die out or are forced to adapt.

Our wars, greed, capitalism, consumerism, selfishness, and industry have put even our planet's health and safety into question. We talk about saving the world, and indeed, efforts are afoot to do this. However, as humans, we know we were never meant to live like we live now. We know that when we enter nature, surrounded by flora and fauna, we are part of this too. There is a deep longing in the human soul to live in balance with this Eden. I'm not suggesting we all go and live like our stone-age ancestors. What I am suggesting is a great fundamental change in how we do society in the ways explained in this article. Many at the top won't want to do it as those at the bottom keep them at the top. Those at the bottom are so keyed into this oppressive system that they either can't or do not know how to change things.

One thing is for sure, though, as long as we keep living the way we are living, nothing will change. And as much as I dream of the ideal world and I pray for it to come about, I fear our society will not change for a long time, sadly, if at all.

You make some great points. I've noticed how tech has made us more connected yet somehow lonelier. And the push for more and more stuff is exhausting. But I wonder, how do we really make the shift towards a more sustainable, meaningful life without sacrificing our livelihoods? Any ideas? Also, the cost of healthy food is a huge barrier. Maybe there are ways to make it more affordable for everyone. What do you think?

I agree we need to stop a lot of what we do now. maybe plant more trees, clean the air more by stopping the overuse of resources we don't use much.

  • Its the fact, I have written something similar to this in my Medium story, Well writtten, keep it up

It's a deeply honest and challenging piece that invites us to reflect on the world we’re creating and whether it's truly the one we want to live in. Beautifully written!

Interesting read Nicholas. The human race has always been in a battle between progress and mistakes. It is a never ending cycle. The current tech period with the introduction of AI will be extremely challenging. I am a great believer in humanity and think that one day we might get it right. Until then, I'm off to my tent!
