Sketches, Screams, and Streams (into the Great Wide Open and Black, Unforgiving Abyss)

Stream of consciousness, poem, rant, whatever. For my ABCommunities Challenge week ending 18/03/25

By Paul StewartPublished 10 months ago 3 min read

Argh, Wilhelm Scream, Primal Scream, to oblivion

Argh, sometimes I just want to break down

and scream, shout, punch and kick

throw stuff, break stuff

fix stuff, mend stuff

sympathy, empathy and love

fellow feeling

milk of human kindness has soured

1,000 miles per hour, you spin round at the equator

67,000 miles per hour, you orbit around the sun

We don't feel it and don't see it

All I can think about is keeping my feet firmly on the ground, feeling the weight shift from the balls of my feet to my toes and back again, in constant surprise that I don't fall off into the great wide open and black, unforgiving the abyss.

When I look up at the sky at night, and see the stars twinkling, shimmering, putting on a show for us, it feels like it is just for me, and for whoever I choose to spend that time with staring at the great wide open and black, unforgiving the abyss.

39 inches/990 millimetres of rain fall each year

139 million are born every year, 4.5 are born every second

we don't feel it all, don't see it all

You'd think after 45 years of living on the planet,

I'd find it easier to describe what it means to live on this planet,

the one fit for life, our life, my life, your life, our life, in our galaxy,

the one that we live, die, love, loss, laugh, cry, fight, defend, argue, agree on, as we all remain firmly on the ground

As Earth's gravity pulls us inwards, towards its core, as the ground beneath our feet provides a reaction force to balance out our weight, which stops us being pulled underground and into the core

You'd think after 45 years these facts would be easier to digest, as I'm staring at the sun or staring at the stars and not falling into the great wide open and black, unforgiving the abyss.

Our spherical planet spinning on its axis, orbiting our sun,

as the moon joins the dance, is enough,

if I think about it too much, to make me cry.

Instead I smile and thank God

I'm not falling into the great wide open and black, unforgiving the abyss.

Even if sometimes I want the earth to stop spinning,

for gravity to give out and for a trip to the great wide open and black, unforgiving the abyss

to forget the troubles, forget the pains, forget the stress and anxiety of living on this planet,

when the approximately 8 billion people who inhabit it can't get along because of borders, religions, races, genders, money, oil, greed, power

When both obesity and malnutrition exist

when both wealth and poverty exist

when both power and slavery exist

when both love and hate exist

Not that I have the answers

Not that I have the answers those of greed, who cause anger and breed hate want to hear

It's really not that hard

It's really quite simple

Like really boring simple

Just be nice

Why can't we just be nice?

If construct destroys a society, why keep it?

We all stand on the planet, all feel the wind through our hair, all feel the sun on our eyes, cry when we're sad, cry when we're happy, laugh when we're sad, laugh when we're happy

Really

Hippy sentiments or not, I don't know why I have to defend the fact that the goal we should all hold dear is to be nice

Just be nice

I love your stream of consciousness poems, rants, whatevers! Wasn't sure what to expect with an earth community piece, but I love that you went in a poetic direction. Very thought provoking as usual! And I love all the values and measurements you included!

If only being nice was so simple...

Hey Paul, it is a pity we can't all get on. Like you say, we all basically do the same things. Where do I find the ABCommunities challenges?

  • Love tempered with grace--to be nice to one another--at once the simplest, most profound, & most challenging of aspirations.

Oof - the milk of human kindness has soured. Oh damn. Well done Paul - this was great.

Just be nice. Words to live by, my friend! Wonderful, thought provoking and as you wrote, really quite simple. Why do we make everything so hard!

Another great stream-of-consciousness rant <3 You know, if the world didn't spin, you'd float off into space. And yet, all that spinning doesn't make you sick. Hmmm, being nice. Too much meanness. Rats in a cage. a little bit hippy. I may be getting an idea...

Couldn't agree more with you. Why can't we all just be nice to each other. This will be question that will probably never be answered in our lifetimes. This would make a great paper/article though. Good job.

What it means to live on this planet, I also wonder.

The standalone line, "Why can't we just be nice?" is something I ask myself almost daily. It's not that hard, really. Great writing, as always!
