Wildlife of West Africa

Senegal is located on the western coast of Africa. The country has a tropical climate, three major rivers, and dry grassland.

Aardvarks are medium-sized species of mammals with long pig-like snouts. They live in sub-Saharan Africa. These animals are nocturnal and burrowing, feeding on ants and termites, which they dig out with their strong claws.

African forest elephants are one of two species of African elephants. These are the smallest ones. These elephants are native to the Congo Basin and West Africa. They live in humid forests.

African leopards are the most common and widespread subspecies of leopards. They live all around sub-Saharan Africa. Their homes are made in savannas, grasslands, and mountainous forests. They are carnivores and adaptable in terms of diet and habitat according to prey availability.

Banded mongooses are a species of mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They live in colonies with a complex social structure. Their homes are in savannas, grasslands, and open forests and stay near bodies of water. They use rock shelters and thickets to hide and feed on insects, small reptiles, and birds.

Caracals are medium-sized species of wild cats native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are expert climbers, jumpers, and swimmers.

Giant elands are also known as Lord Derby elands, They are the largest species of antelope in the world. Due to extinction these elands can only be found in Niokolo-Koba National Park. They are herbivores and feed on foliage, branches, and grasses. These animals are very fast and can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h / 43 mph.

Giant pangolins are the largest species of pangolins in the world, They live in Central and West Africa. Their diets consist of termites and ants. These animals live in forests and rainforests and are solitary mammals. They are able to climb trees.

Guinea baboons are also referred to as savanna baboons. They are a species of baboons native to restricted areas in West Africa. These are the smallest baboons in the world.

Green monkeys are a species of Old World monkeys native to West Africa from Senegal to the Volta River in Ghana. They live in the wooded areas of Senegal. These monkeys dine on crabs, invertebrates, and fruit.

Korrigums are also referred to as Senegal hartebeests. They are a subspecies of the topi, large antelopes native to Africa. These animals are mostly restricted to national parks.

Roan antelopes are a species of antelope native to West, Central, and South Africa. These are among the largest antelopes in the world. They live in groups of about 5 to 15, dominated by a mature male. They make their homes in tropical and subtropical grasslands as well as savannas, scrublands, and woodlands, feeding on grasses.

Spotted hyenas are also referred to as laughing hyenas. They are the most common species of large carnivores in all of Africa.

Warthogs live in various habitats in Senegal, among them wooded savannas, grass steppes, and semi-deserts. But their lack of body fat and fur means they need certain landscape features to help them regulate their body temperatures. They use wet areas called “wallows” to cool off in the mud when the temperature is hot. In cool temperatures, they go inside burrows to stay warm. They fill these holes with grass and use them as shelter and insulation from the hot sun and cold temperatures. They also use their strong, blunt snouts and tusks to dig up and eat tubers, bulbs, and roots.

Western African lions are also referred to as Northern lions. They are a subspecies of the African lion found in West Africa.

Western chimpanzees are a large species of apes native to West Africa. Their population is isolated and small. These are carnivores that also feed on other monkeys like bushbabies, green monkeys, and Guinea baboons.

Western red colobuses are also called Upper Guinea red colobuses. They are a species of Old World monkeys that are native to the forests of West Africa.

Birds

Senegal parrots have feathers in bright colors. They inhabit wooded areas from savannas to mangroves.

Aquatic Animals

African manatees are also referred to as West African manatees. They are a species of manatees native to the western coast of Africa. They live around oceanic shores as well as freshwater streams and rivers.

Hippopotamuses are the largest animals in Senegal you can find in freshwater. They are the third largest land animals. Hippos have unique skin that needs to be wet most of the day, meaning they spend most of their time submerged in shallow lakes, rivers, and swamps.

    I once had two Senegal parrots. One was deaf the other blind I love birds and mostly animals 💙💙💙
