The Republic of the Congo is also known as Congo-Brazzaville. It is a country on the western coast of Central Africa. Its capital, Brazzaville, is on the Congo River; the Kouilou-Nilari River drains the coastal plain, and the interior of the country has a central plateau with two basins to the north and the south.

Native Animals

African brush-tailed porcupines are a species of Old World porcupines that are native to central and western Africa. They live in small family groups of about 8. They use their quills for protection.

African forest elephants are among the most notorious species of wild animals in Africa. They live in groups of up to 20 and feed on leaves, fruit, bark, and seeds.

African golden cats are a species of wild cats endemic to the rainforests of western and central Africa.

African leopards are the most widespread subspecies found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. They have long bodies and short legs with spots all over their bodies.

Central African pottos are a species of primate native to most of central Africa. This species of monkey is highly versatile and can adapt to almost any environment.

Central chimpanzees are also called tschegos. They are a species of primates related to humans, orangutans, and gorillas. They almost exclusively live in Congo, Cameroon, and Gabon, usually in tropical moist forests and wet savanna woodlands.

Egyptian fruit bats are a species of megabat native to Africa, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and the Mediterranean. They are highly social animals living in colonies of thousands. They use echolocation and feed on a variety of fruit.

Giant pangolins are the only mammals with large protective scales covering their skin. They inhabit savannas, forests, and rainforests.

Mantled guerezas are also referred to as Abyssinian black-and-white colobuses. They are a species of Old World monkeys, native to eastern and central Africa. They have characteristic white fringes of hair that run along each side of their body and are arboreal and diurnal. These primates can be found in evergreen forests and feed on arthropods, fruits, leaves, and seeds. They live in groups of 3 to 15 individuals, which usually include a dominant male, several females, and their offspring, while other mature males live in all-male groups.

Servals, with their large ears and long legs, are close relatives of African golden cats. They can be seen all throughout the continent.

Western gorillas are among the largest and strongest species of primate on Earth. They mostly live in protected areas.

Aquatic Animals

African manatees are a species of manatee native to most of the western coastline of Africa. They are the only species of manatees found in the Old World. These are herbivores but occasionally feed on fish, mollusks, and clams.

False killer whales are found along the coastline of the Congo. They are an aggressive species of oceanic dolphins and highly social animals.

Humpback whales are a species of baleen whale and one of the largest species of rorqual.

Orcas, or killer whales, can be found off the coast of the Congo. They are large-toothed whales that hunt for fish and sea mammals.
