The wildlife of West Africa

The West African country of Burkina Faso has four national parks and one of the largest populations of animals in West Africa. Animals native to this country are elephants, leopards, hippos, among other wildlife.

Burkina Faso has 147 species of mammals, 330 species of aquatic animals and many species of insects and birds.

Aardvarks are a species of burrowing, nocturnal mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are insectivores with long pig-like snouts. Their diet includes ants and termites.

African bush elephants are one of two living African elephant species and are the largest living terrestrial animals in the world. These elephants can be found in 37 African countries inhabiting woodlands, agricultural lands, and wetlands.

African leopards make their homes in most of sub-Saharan Africa but can also be spotted in North Africa. These animals re persecuted for attacking livestock.

Chimpanzees are a species of great ape native to tropical Africa. They inhabit forests and savannas and live in groups of up to 150 chimps. These chimps are one of the smartest species of monkeys, being able to use tools and modify sticks and rocks to hunt and find honey, ants, nuts, and water.

Hippopotamuses are among the most famous large animals in Africa. They are herbivores and semi-aquatic and live near bodies of freshwater and feed on grass in sub-Saharan Africa. Hippos can be very aggressive.

Northwest African cheetahs are a critically endangered species native to the Sahara and the Sahel. They have shorter coats and a whiter color. There are no spots on their faces. Cheetahs are nocturnal and keep covered during the heat of the daytime.

Olive baboons are a species of Old World monkeys native to 25 countries of Central Africa, from Mali to Ethiopia. These primates gather in groups of 15 to 150 baboons.

Oribis are a small species of antelopes native to eastern, western, and southern Africa. They live in small herds of around four members and feed on fresh grasses. They make their homes in tropical grasslands and savannas. Only males have horns.

Rusty-spotted genets are native to sub-Saharan Africa. These animals are omnivores and feed on rodents like rats, shrews, and mice, but also spiders, eggs, fruits, seeds, and berries.

Servals are a speices of wild cats native to Afria. They live in most of sub-Saharan Africa, from northwestern countries like Burkina Faso to South Africa. Apart from rainforest regions, they are seen everywhere, usually in protected areas. Servals like savannas and cork oak forests. These wild cats are solitary animals and exist from a carnivorous diet of rodents, small birds, insects, and reptiles.

Striped polecats (pictured above) can be found in dry and arid areas, such as savannas. They are carnivors that eat small rodents, birds, snakes, insects, and amphibians, and their very sharp teeth are perfectly adapted to sheer flesh.

Water chevrotains are also referred to as fanged deer, a species of ruminant native to tropical Africa. These deer are nocturnal and feed on fruit but can also feed on crabs, insects, and scavenged meat.

West African giraffes are a species of giraffes native to the Sahel region of West Africa. These giraffes have light-colored spots, and there are only around 400 individuals in total. Their diets consist of leaves.

Birds

Beaudouin snake eagles are native to the Sahel region of West Africa. They make their homes in wooded savanna and other open woodlands, and hunt from perches.

Great snipes are a small species of waders native to northeastern Europe. They migrate to sub-Saharan Africa. Their diet is made of earthworms and insects, as well as some plants.

Marine Animals

Spotted-necked otters are a species of otters native to sub-Saharan Africa. They live in lakes and large rivers and feed on fish.

West African slender-nosed crocodiles are one of the two species of these crocs found in Central Africa and one of five species of crocodile in Africa.
