A taste of Colorado's Seasons
All four, if we are lucky
Every year it seems to blend into one day. At least most of the time. It’s hard to remember what happened when. But thank goodness for the season. Without them, we wouldn’t live long on earth. I have noticed the different seasons that often pass by, regardless. Although in Colorado, we seem to have 2, 3 each year.
If we are lucky, we have a fall. The other three make their presence known and felt. Here are some of my favorite memories from each one that comes.
This article will focus on the ones we learned about in school. You know, the ones we are most familiar with. Spring, summer. Fall, winter, of course. Where I live, it’s hard to tell some seasons apart. but if you observe close enough, you can find the tiniest change. it’s amazing to notice that no matter what every place goes through, change. Who knows, such a change could spark a story. Looking at you Disney Fairies and fairy tales.
Fall lasts a few weeks here in Colorado. we get beautiful colors. One tree in our dog yard has the most beautiful pink coloring. It looks like a mini Japanese pink cherry blossom. So gorgeous. It’s like a part of a world all its own. Even where we live, deep in the forest. The thing that makes it stink though, is almost all the trees around here are pine. So this Japanese tree is just an odd one. That is why I love it so.
The one way to tell that fall has definitely arrived. The gradual to constant chill in the air, with the occasional snow flurry. It doesn’t feel like it. Just an extended summer then one day you are suddenly hit with frozen temps.
If there is one season of the year, I dislike the most is winter. One of the main reasons is the constant pain I’m in. another one is my favorite sweeping out the water in the back hall. It’s always worse after a major snowstorm, because that melt off has to go somewhere. So why not in the back hall, right? Let’s just say that it’s a way to work off those pounds.
At least the horses on the worst days are inside, safe and sound. Maybe a little cranky being in tight quarters. Well, tight for them anyway. And of course we keep them warm with cozy blankets. By the way, those blankets make great pillows. I may or may not have that experience.
Ah, summer. My favorite time of the year. Full of warmth, smiles, and happiness. Although the last two are year around. But still. The most tell tell a thing about summers here happens after 3 in the afternoon. We get storms like you wouldn’t believe. I will admit not all storms are huge thunderstorms, that come crashing in at a moment’s notice. But we have those more often, than any other place I have lived.
The thing I love the most is all the fun outside that can happen. Instead of running inside to keep warm. We take our dogs for walks thru the woods out back. We also throw balls or toys for them as well. You know it’s been a fun day when both of them are panting and wagging tails like crazy.
One of the tale tale signs that spring has sprung is mostly unexpected. We have sometime really heavy fog roll in. and I mean heavy like soup, literally. We have often had to use a rope to check on horses or the other animals we have on the property. Which is crazy because everyone is within 25 feet of the house. The most wonderful sign of spring is horses eating the grass like there is no tomorrow.
Mind you, this is Colorado weather. So it’s probably different where you are at. So next time you wish to visit Colorado. Hopefully, this helps you plan accordingly.
