A Journey Through the Heart of Bhutan: Experiencing Happiness and Hospitality
A Traveler's Reflection on Happiness and Connection in the Land of Thunder Dragons.

Nestled in the majestic Himalayas between Tibet and Nepal, Bhutan stands out as one of the most enchanting and untouched destinations in the world. Often referred to as the happiest country on Earth, Bhutan is a small yet mighty nation characterized by its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and the warmth of its people. As I embarked on my journey through this magical land, I was filled with excitement and anticipation.## Arrival in Bhutan
The journey to Bhutan was nothing short of an adventure itself. After over 30 hours of travel, including four flights and a layover in Bangkok, I finally arrived in this picturesque country. The air was crisp, and the stunning views of the Himalayan mountains instantly took my breath away. I had dreamed of working with National Geographic for years, and now, standing on the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, that dream was coming true.
With over 70% of its land covered in forest, Bhutan is the world’s first carbon-negative country. The vibrant culture, steeped in tradition and spirituality, reflects a commitment to preserving both the environment and the happiness of its people. I was eager to dive into the experiences that awaited me.
## The Experience of Homestays
My journey began with a homestay, a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture. I met my host, Tsoki, who welcomed me into her family's traditional farmhouse, a beautiful structure built 75 years ago by her grandfather. With three temple rooms, the homestay was more like a mansion. I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate Bhutanese architecture.
“Welcome to your own house!” Tsoki said, proudly showing me around. I felt an immediate connection to the place and the warm-hearted people of Bhutan.
## Discovering &Beyond
After settling in, I also had the chance to experience &Beyond, a luxury accommodation that promises an authentic Bhutanese lifestyle. Nestled in the Punakha Valley next to the Mo Chhu River, the property features only nine rooms, ensuring a personalized experience. From yoga sessions to world-class food and traditional spa treatments, &Beyond aimed to showcase the best of Bhutan.
To my surprise, my room featured a stunning bathtub with a skylight and an outdoor shower, perfectly blending luxury with nature. The unique concept of a “tented suite” elevated the experience even further, offering a true connection to the surroundings.
## Cultural Immersion: Buddhism and Archery
Traveling in Bhutan requires a guide, and I was fortunate to have Tashi by my side. He introduced me to local traditions and Buddhist practices. One of our first stops was Dochula Pass, home to 108 stupas dedicated to fallen soldiers. As we performed a kora—walking clockwise around the stupas—I learned the importance of collective goodness in Bhutanese culture.
“Whenever you do kora, think of all sentient beings,” Tashi explained. This sense of community was a recurring theme throughout my journey.
Later, I ventured into a nearby village to learn the traditional sport of archery. Despite my lack of skill, the local archers cheered me on. After a comical struggle, I finally hit the target, and the sense of accomplishment felt as exhilarating as a World Cup victory.
## Thrilling Adventures: Rafting and Culinary Challenges
At &Beyond, Tashi and I transitioned from archery to rafting on the Punakha River. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, I found the rapids to be thrilling. The joy of navigating the river while enjoying the beauty of Bhutan was an unforgettable experience.
Later, I returned to the homestay to face a different kind of challenge: a spicy chili competition with Tsoki. Bhutanese cuisine is known for its heat, and I was determined to prove my mettle against her. The chilies were intense, and despite my Mexican background, I felt the heat.
Next, I was invited to the outdoor kitchen to learn how to make Mengey, also known as Bhutanese pizza. Tsoki guided me through the process, and I reveled in the rich, spicy flavors that characterized Bhutanese cooking.
## A Spiritual Encounter
One of the highlights of my journey was hiking to the Khamsum Yulley temple. The stunning architecture and serene atmosphere left me in awe. Tashi explained the significance of performing prostrations as a way to release negative thoughts, deepening my understanding of Bhutanese Buddhism.
To my surprise, the head monk of the temple invited me for tea, a gesture that felt profoundly special. Sharing that moment was a true privilege, and it inspired me to reflect on the values of humility and growth.
## A Bittersweet Farewell
As my time in Bhutan drew to a close, I savored a breakfast with a view in front of the temple. Each moment spent in this beautiful country was filled with gratitude, not just for the stunning landscapes, but for the people who welcomed me into their lives.
The hospitality of the Bhutanese people left a lasting impression. Their genuine kindness and sense of community are woven into the fabric of their culture. I realized that Bhutan is not just a destination; it's an experience that teaches the value of happiness, connection, and spirituality.
Before I left, I participated in a ceremony to bless my journey, tying colorful prayer flags that symbolize the five elements. It was a touching moment, allowing me to send my wishes for happiness to anyone who crosses paths with the flags.
## Conclusion: The Essence of Bhutan
Bhutan is a unique blend of adventure, spirituality, and culinary delights. The combination of a homestay and a stay at &Beyond allowed me to experience the country from multiple perspectives. The warmth and hospitality of the Bhutanese people, paired with their commitment to happiness, made my trip an unforgettable journey.
I left Bhutan with a heart full of gratitude, cherishing the lessons learned and the connections made. It’s a land that has touched my soul, and I can’t wait to return to this extraordinary country that truly embodies the essence of happiness.
