The Reason I Have Deleted Three Of My Vocal Stories

A Nightcafe Creation By The Author

Introduction

This is just a short piece on an event that has caused me to delete three of my Vocal stories, two of which were recent challenge entries.

As you know, I often use art I find shared on Facebook and elsewhere as inspiration and I always credit the work in my Vocal post. I also message the artist if they are current and publishing new art.

Usually, they are very pleased with my work and promotion of their work, but I got this:

Are you earning money from the poems inspired by my art?

Did you receive the permission from The Glittering Fox to publish the book?

My work is under copyright and requires a contract through a publisher for use of my images to earn money.

I messaged and told them I had removed the stories, and received a thank you.

What I did was textbook fair dealing under UK law, and thanks to a close friend who did a lot of looking into the situation. I like sharing the art, but Vocal does not pay enough to employ an artist if I use their work, which is why most of the time I use free or Nightcafe-generated work.

My apologies if you are wondering where these stories went.

The Artists Who Sent Positive Vibes When I Used Their Work

If you use someone else's work in your creations, you must always credit them and the source, and I always do.

But these are the ones I have a good relationship with; the links are in the stories.

The Enchanted Booklet and other Facebook pages are great sources of out-of-copyright images, but I always credit the source.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many artists who are fine with me using their work, so one who doesn't want me to is not a problem, and inadvertently, she gave me this story.

Thank you so much for reading.

Mike it's been an absolute honour to be the inspiration for your beautiful poems and the ultimate thrill having our book on Amazon! The Glittering Fox

That's quite sad that someone is only concerned about money. If people like this knew how much money (we don't make on Vocal or any other platform), maybe they would just be appreciative that someone thought it was good enough to reference.

It's so sad that you had to remove them, but I'm glad you didn't get into trouble. I love all the art you use! πŸ’œ

  • The unfairness of requiring artwork to promote the article or essay is annoying to me. I can draw some squiggly lines and upload it easily but it looks unpolished and like a frumpy cheeseburger on a paper plate. We could also use the same photo again and again and again, but the redundancy is less than promotional. Plagiarism happens all the time unintentionally in the written word, yet for some reason visual artists act like they are more important than writers.

I've had a lot of discussions with artists about copyright and permissions to use someone's work, during breakfast meetings with an artists' group I used to manage. Most of them were willing to appreciate someone sharing their work in a piece the writer wasn't paid for. If the article, story, poem, etc. earned any money, they felt they should be compensated or at least have granted permission for its use. I usually use my own work or Unsplash these days. Sorry to hear you had an unpleasant experience.

I just avoid works of other people as best I can, unless i know them personally. But granted permission should be ok. I loved The Glitttering Fox one though. Happy you still have some who are ok.
