Pride and Prejudice (2005): a gem of romantic cinema

By Marcela marinPublished 3 months ago 2 min read

Pride and Prejudice (2005) is, personally, my favorite romance film. I know it may sound cliché, but the story of a young woman who finds herself embroiled in a romance with the proud Mr. Darcy—a well-known millionaire of the time—is completely captivating, even for those who aren't fans of the romance genre.

I'm writing this article because many people flatly refuse to watch films of this type, and with this text, I want to give you my reasons for encouraging you to see this feature film, which in my opinion is the best in the genre. Of course, there are other great stories like The Notebook (2004), Pretty Woman (1990), or Brokeback Mountain (2005), which may deserve their own article later.

First of all, Pride and Prejudice is based on a novel first published in 1813 by Jane Austen, which in itself gives it enormous historical and literary value. It's not just a love story, but also a social critique of England at that time, where marriage was seen more as a transaction than an act of love.

Secondly, the acting is impeccable. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen manage to convey every emotion with breathtaking naturalness. The settings are incredibly beautiful, and the way each moment of the film is constructed makes it feel as if you're actually stepping into the story. The dances, dialogue, and setting are carefully crafted, transporting the viewer back to the early 19th century.

The casting was perfect, and the way the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy develops is so immersive that you end up feeling like you're part of the plot. But what, for me, gives this film its special touch is its happy ending.

Nowadays, romantic films have become colder and more realistic, depicting the difficulties and heartbreaks that are also part of love. While that has its value, I think we all need a happy ending from time to time, one that reminds us that love can end well, even if it's only in fiction. Pride and Prejudice achieves that: it makes us feel, for a moment, that love is still there, and that sometimes, when pride and prejudice are left behind, the ending can be truly beautiful.
