I Took a Break From Writing My Sci-Fi Novel

I’ve been working on this story for quite some time. I’ve been taking a break from it for a few weeks but have still been writing nonetheless. With my break from this story, it’s time to pick up where I left off. Sometimes it’s good and even much needed to step away from work for a time as long as it isn’t for too long.

It’s a science fiction story that I am making into a novel.

Donovan Stowe is ripped from his world and into the world of Illumina where the unimaginable is just part of everyday life. His discoveries lead him to a highly advanced tech research facility called Insight. Donovan’s unusual fascination with these everyday technologies captures the immediate attention of the formidable Dr. Maddox. Before long, Donovan finds himself caught between projects full of obsession and fascination and desperately searching for a way home.

This story will include the fascination with technology, the risks involved, and the obsession with technology if we aren’t careful.

Here is an excerpt from it:

From my WIP (work in progess) "Insight"

Dr. Maddox sat in his quarters hunched over his telepathic device. He meticulously shifted the pieces of the device around being careful to memorize their original position. He had every part of the device and where it went memorized that he was confident in experimenting. It’s what he did. As a scientist, he had always thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with different theories and formulas.

He eased the most important component into its designated space. The small chip was the most crucial piece of the telepathy device. Without it, the device would be nothing and deemed useless.

He placed the device against the nape of his neck and focused with the deepest intention. The moment Donovan claimed he had seen visuals, Dr Maddox was filled with hope. For the device to achieve visuals was a significant breakthrough and was the ultimate goal when the device was initially created. Dr. Maddox had no doubt in his mind that if the device had not been suspended, visuals would have ultimately achieved.

His focus drifted to Donovan and the mystery that surrounded him. He hastily shifted a few parts of the device around as distracting thoughts filled his mind. His long awaited desire to create an effective telepathic device was nearly crushed again because of Donovan’s senselessness and irresponsibility.

He would not let this opportunity slip away!

A harsh reality fell over Dr. Maddox as he realized if anyone had seen the device, his time as Dr. Maverik’s most trusted lead scientist to over see their wondrous tech lab would be threatened.

His mind drifted further on the mystery that surrounded Donovan as he momentarily forgot his focus on the device.

Where precisely was Donovan from? What was that strange otherworldly device he had discovered in Donovan’s pocket the day Donovan accidentally left his jacket in his quarters?

As these thoughts invaded his mind, a vision flashed in front of him for just a few fleeting seconds.

Dr. Maddox leaned forward in disbelief and intrigue barely able to comprehend just exactly what he was seeing.

There, right before him, from the fleeting seconds of visuals he did see, Dr. Maddox saw a glimpse into another world. A rather strange and unfathomable world with technologies he’d never seen before.

Vehicles of various shapes and sizes that rode above city streets and appeared to be driven by people themselves. They made contact with the road and didn’t hover like the vehicles of the expedite system.

His eyes shifted madly trying to make sense of the peculiarities he saw unfolding in front of him. There was no sign of any teleportation ports. But how?

He noticed another strange observation. Many held the same strange device that he had discovered in Donovan’s pocket as they walked around.

Some held the device within the palm of their hands, tapping and scrolling over the device’s screen while others held the device up to their ear, listening and then talking into it. They did all of this with the utmost confidence and ease. The same level of confidence that people here had operating their personal connection codes.

His gaze shifted in astonishment as he noticed one noticeable and peculiar observation in just those few seconds. Not one single person was wearing a personal connection band. That could only mean no one had a personal connection code and that they didn’t exist. The thought was inconceivable.

How was this possible? Dr. Maddox contemplated the impossibilities when the vision abruptly ended and left him with even more questions.

He tore the device off in sheer disbelief of everything he just saw. Was this the world where Donovan was from?

The non existence of his personal connection code. The complete lack of knowledge he had on the existence and function of the personal connection codes and other technologies. The over fascination that Donovan had as if he were seeing these everyday technologies for the first time.

The mystery surrounding Donovan was starting to fall into place and still, this vision only scratched the surface.

Dr. Maddox placed the device back on as a strong desire to activate another vision and uncover more about Donovan and this strange world overcame him. He focused his attention and waited but was unable to activate another vision.

He tore the device off in frustration. His telepathic device was making superb progress but there was still so much to be desired for it.

He examined the device further, turning it from one side to the other. The components within the device were placed as they should be. It was now just a matter of activating the device with his mind. That would be the most challenging part of the device’s development. Far more challenging than the mad shifting he made with the components in order to achieve the device’s perfection.

A thought intruded Dr. Maddox’s mind and he initially pushed such a ludicrous thought out of his mind. It nudged him gently, coercing him, the thought only growing stronger.

He couldn’t! It was the very thing he explicitly warned Donovan not to do. The very thing Donovan deliberately defied his orders and did.

He stared at the device in fascination. Wearing the device out of the secure privacy of his quarters was incredibly risky and foolish.

His subtle smile broadened. But wouldn’t the possibility of achieving another breakthrough with the device and uncovering the mystery behind Donovan be all worth it?

He contemplated his confidence in the eludesiht’s ability for the device to remain invisible.

Was the risk worth the gain? He placed the device in a secure location in his quarters, his decision already made.
