SHORT STORY
The next couple of days were a little awkward between the married couple. Every day Jessica came home to a big surprise, one greater than the other. It went from a bouquet of long-stemmed red roses to a diamond tennis bracelet and matching earrings, to a beautiful black and teal cocktail dress with heels to match. On the final day, a note saying, Get dressed, a car will be there in 2 hours, Love Jordan. Smiling to herself, Jessica went upstairs, got dressed for an evening with Jordan. Tonight she will put away her bad feeling for La'Janice and let her husband apologize.

The crew 38 Confederate Hammerskins is one of the worlds most violent, feared, and hated criminal organizations. I joined Crew 38 in the year 2007. When I entered the organization I was young and filled with unnecessary rage, hellbent on my own destruction. I felt attracted to the organization because of the destruction and chaos I witnessed the members savor daily. A level 4-5 prison in Virginia is classified as a "Major Compound", or, more commonly referred to as maximum security. I spent the better part of a decade in many cages. A monster behind iron bars and doors. Guards man the birds nests armed with high powered rifles, pistols, and shotguns poised high for all of us cons to see. They never missed the battle flags and bald heads, let alone the enormous population of the Blood and Crip gangs. Surenos, Latin Kings, Gangster Disciple, Dead Man Incorporated, and more gangs controlled the yard.

American Deviance: Functions of Gangs
The history of American Gangs goes all the way back to the orphans of the first immigrants and settlers as a means of survival. Gangs have not disappeared, and the reason for their existence has not either. Most people who join gangs do so in order to survive and/or feel a sense of belonging. This puts children and minorities most at risk for recruitment. Gangs are a perfect example of deviance from the norms of mainstream society and clearly show example of all five functions of deviance: Clarifying norms, unifying the group, diffusing tension, providing jobs, and promoting social change.
