Engaging the community in crime prevention efforts

Ntuzuma Community Unites to Tackle Crime in Lindelani
On 25th January 2025, Ntuzuma A Hall in Lindelani became a beacon of hope and unity as community members, law enforcement officials, and various organizations gathered to address the escalating crime in the Ntuzuma area. The hall was filled to capacity, reflecting the urgency and concern shared by residents who have long endured the devastating effects of criminal activity in their neighborhoods.
This pivotal meeting was spearheaded by the Youth Crime Prevention Desk in collaboration with the Community Police Forum (CPF), the Democracy Development Program (DDP), and the Empower U Community Development Institute. Their joint effort aimed to introduce new strategies and foster stronger partnerships between the community and law enforcement agencies. The event drew representatives from Ntuzuma SAPS, Metro Police, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, and local government, including Councillor Muzikayise Chiliza of Ntuzuma A in Lindelani.
The gathering began with a heartfelt prayer led by Mr. Njabulo Ndlovu of the CPF, setting a tone of unity and purpose. Among the key attendees were Colonel Chiliza, the station commander of Ntuzuma police, Constable Hlabisa, the district communication officer, and Mr. Cebekhulu, chairman of the community police. Also present were Mrs. Nokuthula Ngcobo, the community development worker for Ward 38, and active members of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk, including Mr. Sakhile Mzimela, Mrs. Amanda Novukela, and Mr. Njabulo Mseleku, the CPF district leader. The Malibuye Organization and the local electrical problems manager added their voices to the conversation, highlighting the intersection of infrastructure and safety.
Residents voiced a wide range of concerns, painting a grim picture of the challenges they face daily. Reports of drug trafficking in schools, teachers being shot on school grounds, and frequent house break-ins where valuables like phones and televisions were stolen dominated the discussion. Many spoke of muggings in poorly lit areas, especially those affected by power outages, and the alarming rise in livestock theft. Even more distressing were accounts of unresolved criminal cases, targeted violence against the visually impaired, and incidents of rape—issues that have left the community feeling vulnerable and unheard.
Colonel Chiliza addressed these concerns with empathy and resolve. He emphasized the critical need for collaboration between the police and the community, stating that sustainable solutions could only be achieved through mutual trust and active participation. He highlighted services available at the police station, including the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) desk and Victim Friendly Services, which aim to support survivors and ensure justice. Colonel Chiliza also committed to hosting regular follow-up meetings to assess the progress of these initiatives and refine strategies based on community feedback.
Mrs. Amanda Novukela of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of proactive engagement. “We will work closely with the police to raise awareness about the dangers of crime and how communities can avoid involvement in criminal activities,” she said. “Our workshops will focus on educating young people about the risks of drug abuse and criminal behavior, empowering them to make informed choices.”
The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of determination and solidarity. It was clear that the Ntuzuma community is not willing to stand idly by while crime threatens their safety and well-being. Instead, they are committed to forging stronger ties with law enforcement, advocating for justice, and creating a safer environment for all residents.
This gathering marked a significant step forward in the fight against crime in Ntuzuma. Through continued dialogue, education, and cooperation, the community hopes to reclaim its streets and restore peace and dignity to every household.
