An Italian court has sentenced a 23-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend, a case that has drawn significant attention to the issue of violence against women in Italy.

Filippo Turetta was found guilty of killing 22-year-old Giulia Cecchettin in November 2023, just one week before she was set to graduate from the University of Padua. The court in Venice convicted him on multiple charges, including murder, illegal possession of weapons, kidnapping, and concealing a corpse. In addition to his prison sentence, Turetta was ordered to pay damages to Cecchettin's family and cover their legal costs.

The Italian judicial system typically involves either a panel of judges or a combination of judges and lay jurors in determining verdicts and sentences.

Following the murder, Turetta admitted to disposing of Cecchettin's body in garbage bags and abandoning it in a ravine. He evaded capture for ten days until he was arrested in Germany after her body was discovered.

During the court proceedings, Turetta displayed little emotion as the verdict was announced. Cecchettin’s father, Gino, who attended the hearing, avoided looking at his daughter's killer. He expressed that despite the verdict, he felt no sense of relief or sadness. “As a father, nothing has changed,” he stated.

Prosecutor Andrea Petroni had requested a life sentence based on aggravating factors such as Turetta's premeditated actions, which included gathering weapons and materials intended for the crime. He had lured Cecchettin into his car under false pretenses, claiming he wanted to stop stalking her and maintain a friendship.

Throughout the 10-week trial, Turetta admitted to killing Cecchettin but claimed it was not premeditated. He acknowledged creating a list outlining his intentions and preparations for the act but insisted he never intended to follow through with it. “I was angry... I felt resentment that we had argued again,” he testified.

Turetta's attorney argued against the life sentence, calling it “inhumane and degrading,” and compared him to notorious criminals like Pablo Escobar.

Evidence presented in court included a list Cecchettin had written titled “15 reasons I should leave Filippo,” which revealed her concerns about his controlling behavior and jealousy.

This case has sparked renewed discussions about violence against women in Italy, where statistics indicate that one woman is killed by an intimate partner every three days. Since Cecchettin’s murder, over 100 women have been killed in similar circumstances. Her family has since established the Giulia Cecchettin Foundation to combat gender-based violence and criticized the government for its insufficient response to this pervasive issue.

Elena Cecchettin, Giulia’s sister, highlighted the need for action from authorities: “What is the government doing to prevent violence?” she asked on social media, pointing out that Giulia was killed by a "respectable" Italian man.

In response to the rising issue of femicide, Italy has implemented several measures aimed at combating violence against women. Key initiatives include:

Legislative Framework: In 2013, Italy ratified the Istanbul Convention, which mandates comprehensive measures to prevent and combat violence against women. This was followed by the introduction of a law specifically addressing femicide and the “Code Red” law in 2019, which expedited legal processes for gender-based violence cases and introduced new offenses such as revenge porn and coercion into marriage.

Recent Legislative Developments: Following the high-profile murder of Giulia Cecchettin, the Italian Senate unanimously approved a new bill in November 2023 aimed at strengthening existing laws. This includes enhanced restraining orders for domestic violence offenders and prioritizing legal proceedings related to violence against women. Additionally, a campaign called “Educate on Relationships” is being launched in schools to address sexism and promote healthy relationships from a young age.

Increased Funding: The government has increased funding for anti-violence centers and women's shelters. However, critics argue that these funds have not been effectively distributed, and there remains a significant gap in prevention efforts compared to funding allocated for immediate victim support 2.

Data Collection Initiatives: A law passed in June 2022 mandates statistical inquiries into gender-based violence, allowing for better understanding and monitoring of the issue. This data is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Focus on Prevention: Despite increased funding overall, a significant portion has been directed towards immediate protection rather than long-term prevention strategies. Activists emphasize the need for cultural change to address the root causes of gender-based violence, suggesting that current measures focus too heavily on punitive responses rather than prevention.

Government Commitment: The Italian government has pledged to integrate gender perspectives into national policies and budgets, allocating substantial resources specifically for combating gender-based violence and promoting gender equality.

While these measures indicate progress, advocates argue that more comprehensive strategies are needed to effectively tackle the systemic issues contributing to femicide and violence against women in Italy.
