You can only trust yourself
It was a normal day, hot as always on Alii Dr. I was 22 and living with my 19 year old girlfriend and her mother and sister. We were also using heroin, Xanax when it was around, sometimes Meth as well. Our friend had just gotten arrested we cashed checks for him without questioning where they were from or why he could not do it himself. We however all agreed should shit go south non of us knew anything about each other, 'yeah, right. Bitch if I get arrested I'm ratting you motherfuckers out'.

I Was Being Groomed For Sex Trafficking
We had been best friends since junior year of high school. She was white and well, I wasn’t, but that never seemed to be a problem. Her family took me in as though I were their own. We made occasional black jokes from time to time, but nothing racist just simple things like “is it because you’re black” or “do you want some fried chicken?”

"In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote
I first read this book when I was about fifteen years’ old and it was because I had seen it in the local library but it was a tattered copy and so, I bought my own - intact. From not even opening the book, I felt like this was an important text. I wrote the following about it in my diary even before actually reading the book: “there’s something strange about this book. It’s as if it is asking me not to read it but it’s pulling me in. Something about the phrase ‘in cold blood’ sounds unnerving and dangerous. I’ve heard a bit about it but I was never sure to rely on other people’s verdicts of novels. Apparently though, according to some people - this isn’t really a novel at all. Then what is it?” That was the question I had asked: “What is it?” It isn’t really a novel because it isn’t really fiction and, as I know after many re-reads over the years, it isn’t entirely accurate either and so, it isn’t a non-fiction novel. It is an embellishment of the truth for the sake of entertainment and so, it is half and half, something that humans have been doing for centuries. Yet, it is entirely new. It is the new, modern version of criminal justice novels. It was true-crime and this is where I had first encountered a book of which the entire genre would come to change everything about what I believed literature could be. I would be obsessing over true crime for near a decade afterwards and it would be because of “In Cold Blood”. The first question you always ask yourself when you read “In Cold Blood” for the first time and that was the same question I asked myself when I finished the book. I wrote in my diary: “This was a strange book, I’ve never really read anything like it. The moment I finished it, I just sat there thinking about the same question over and over again - ‘what happens if it’s all entirely true?’”

Fireflies
George Moore, Greg “Sparky” Knighten and Richard Goeglein had taken a trip just south of Midlothian, Texas. The three teenagers had just turned off FM875 and into a secluded field. George had driven Knighten and Goeglein to meet an acquaintance to buy some weed. The teenagers put down the back of George’s red pickup truck and sat on the tailgate.

Review of 'Balthazar'
My wife and I just finishing bingeing two seasons, sixteen episodes, of Balthazar, the French series on Prime Video Acorn, made in 2018 and 2019, streaming here since April. Despite it being about a Parisian coroner (Balthazar) who cuts open dead bodies and hasn't gotten over the terrible murder of his fiance (or maybe wife) 15 years ago, the series is actually a great pick-me-up in these, our very troubled, times.

JACK'S LIFE
Walking past the cemetery, with its high hedges guarding the sleep of the dead, I looked ahead into the distance. It was a fresh spring morning. The trees were starting to bloom and I could see squirrels running along the branches, playing with each other. I had come to visit a family grave, my great-great-grandfather Jack Black-Montague. More of a family tradition than one done out of emotion but I always enjoyed laying flowers at the grave as my ancient grandfather had led such an interesting life, or so the legend says, a story that has been passed down the generations.
