The Chip
Please let her be here. Please let her be here. Please let her be here. I grabbed the chrome door handle, looked up from my silent prayer and through the glass door to breathe a sigh of relief. She was here. Thank God. The other female guard behind the front desk was a wildebeest compared to her. Then again, most women are wildebeests when compared to this six foot two-inch stack of deliciousness with ample talents, massive rear cushions and curves in all the right places. To think that she puts all of that and her long, flowing black hair into a rent-a-cop uniform every day is a shame.

The Office
James Wright rests his head against his hands while scratching his short black hair under his grey security guard cap. He pays half attention to the twenty monitors in front of him. James stares at the monitors and shakes his head, letting out another deep sigh. As his eyelids get heavier and heavier and his head begins to slide off his right hand, he’s saved by the vibrations of his cell phone. James snaps his head up and blinks a couple of times, trying to clear his vision. His phone practically dances in front of him, flashing “Melissa” on the screen repeatedly.

Smile At The End Of The Road
It feels like I’ve been traveling down this winding road forever. The darkness of night has long since overtaken the light of day and the light from the full moon is shrouded by the dark gray thunderclouds looming overhead. The rain’s been falling for hours now, soaking through my black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans, making my clothes stick to my skin. The water pooling on the obsidian asphalt is seeping further into my brown leather boots with every aching step I take, and the chilling night air isn’t helping matters any. I’ve lost count of the number of cars that have passed me by, but I’d say it’s the same as the amount of raindrops that have fallen from the clouds above.

Living While Incarcerated
Up until ten years ago, I knew all about incarceration because it had been apart of my life since I was twenty-one and I will be fifty in less than two weeks. A Better Life
Jason stretched out on the living room sofa as a slight yawn escaped his mouth. The baseball game wore him out. It was boiling outside. Yesterday, the temperature reached up to one hundred degrees, and it was not even mid-June. Outside, the sun beat down on the small town of Lorena with unrelenting fury. The hot desert winds that swept into the West Texas town brought painful stinging clouds of dust. In the summer months, most afternoons were free of children playing, who, like Jason, sought refuge in the safety of their homes.
