Sunflower
“It’s all up here” I responded slyly as I stared into her glittery brown eyes. That smile could set any heart a glow and I knew just what to say to ignite that radiance. Every word a gentle stroke, every gesture sent a breeze to calm any foul thought. I was a dream to this goddess sent to earth. I would deliver her from any hardship. She could rest in my arms knowing no harm, no ill will shall befall her in my presence. I am her knight and she is my moon.

Mittens
It was ghostly quiet as he walked down the sidewalk. He saw the streetlight just slightly shimmer off an object that was slightly covered by the green shrubs on the side of the concrete edge of the Johnson’s Bank. He bent down, slowly, and only then was the deathly silence broken by his gasp. Holding his right side, where the bullet had pierced through him early, he slowly picked up the pristine black notebook. He stood there panting. The world wasn’t growing dark yet, but he sure thought it lost its shine. Pain does that, at least to him, distracts him. He looked down at the black notebook he picked up and strongly considered throwing into the water on the other side of the street. Surely this bound paper couldn’t be worth the pain he just experienced. Picking it up was clearly a mistake, although this made him consider the mistake he made earlier, in getting punched with a bullet in the first place.

We Were Partners. Top Story - February 2021.
“Hello Tim,” I greeted, squeezing past the organized piles of junk on the floor of my brother’s apartment. I set the few bags of groceries I had picked up earlier for him on his cluttered kitchen counter. I suppose I’d forgotten what it was like to live single—no one cared about the mess. My nose wrinkled at the smell in the air. Just because we lived in Amherst, Massachusetts, the permeating stench of fish in his apartment did not make it any more bearable.

L.A: Where True Crime Thrives
The Zooter Riots of 1943: Some of you reading this may be thinking, what is a zoot? Well the term, 'zoot suits' refers to baggy suits that were often worn by minorities in the early 1940's, specifically Latinos. The Latino youths of California, often referred to as "pachucos," wore these flashy suits and hats were often viewed as thugs and gangsters by the wealthy white members of society. Given the war that was going on at the time, servicemen often viewed these suits as a sign of disrespect due to the shortage of materials across the nation. The wartime restrictions of clothing materials also led to bootleg tailors who viewed as conmen and unpatriotic and the form 'zoot suit' was born. Associated with all of this was a large amount of racisim towards the Latino community as a whole and led to assaults in neighborhoods before the riots finally began.

“No, I don’t think Chantelle always had that little black notebook. At least, she didn’t have it the first few times I met her. I think it showed up last summer, right when she started asking so many questions we all wondered whether she was writing a book or something. But she moved to Nelson a little under a year ago, at the end of winter. I remember seeing skis in her truck bed when she first drove in and having a good laugh with the guys, wondering what she thought she was getting herself into. Nelson might be high desert, and it does get cold in the winter, but we haven’t seen snow in decades, and even then it was just little flurries. No one’s going skiing around here.
