Scotch and Intrigue
Washington, DC 1987 It was a relatively slow day at the bar as Zoe set things up for the evening ahead, the dark days of January generally were. She was exhausted having been up-all-night writing yet another research paper; halfway through her law degree, she could not wait to be done so she could quit the service industry once and for all. Tired of the late nights and living off tips, she knew she was burned out. She quietly stocked the wine cabinet, wiped down the liquor bottles and polished wine glasses as she glanced over at the lone patron seated near the end of the bar. She had waited on this guy many times before, he was nice enough, but she was never able to engage him much in conversation, mainly because English wasn’t his native tongue. He always ordered the same thing, Ardbeg on the rocks, and he tipped well.

INMATE 53006
Inmate 53006 Inmate 53006 sat stiffly upright on the edge of his weathered mattress. He stared blankly at the beige wall opposite him, ignoring the claustrophobic 7 by 12, by 8.5 foot windowless cuboid that encapsulated him. The mattress had never been replaced, or washed. It was only given a fortnightly change of sheets if the guards were feeling charitable.

The Little Black Book
“And that’s another grand in the bank for me.” A proud scoff echoed as a young woman put her phone back into her back pocket. One more investment returned, it started small but she had been on a roll for the past couple of weeks, researching the trends and making sure to put that tiny little bit she happened across in the right stock. Just a few dollars adds up quickly when you invest in the right things.

Providence
Providence We were holed up in a trailer on a hillock of mud and pine needles that winter, surrounded by piles of black trash bags, a broken picnic table, an abandoned refrigerator, and at least nine children’s bicycles in various states of brokenness. We’d both been laid off from our jobs in town and spent the days playing cards and watching the same few DVDs. Our unemployment had run out, and we were still waiting for our food stamps.

Of Murders, Of Men
"Kiss me once, then kiss me twice Then kiss me once again. It's been a long, long time. I haven't felt like this, my dear, since... I can't remember when. It's been a long…long time. You'll never know how many dreams I've dreamed about you, or how empty they seem without you… So, kiss me once then kiss me twice Then kiss me once again… It's been a long…long time…" the radio played softly throughout the hotel room.

My boyfriend won a cooking competition
Something is going on with Patrick. Ever since he entered this cooking competition, it’s always just him and his little black notebook. Learching over the pages and writing with such vigor he might start a friction fire. I mean, I’M his girlfriend. The least he can do is pay attention to me just a little bit. His “Bailey burrito” requires some much needed attention. That’s the pet name he gave me. “Bailey burrito” yeah, vomit inducing isn’t it? Hah, only a chef would come up with that, I suppose. Though, I do want him to win. I mean, $20,000 usd?! That’s some cash we could really use right now. But ..something has been “off” I guess. It’s hard to describe. He’s got these, dark, black rings around his eyes. So much so, he’s beginning to resemble a panda.

Blood Money
As I ran away from the mafia leader and his crew, I knew my time on earth was coming to an end. Everything at that moment started to move in slow motion. I could hear the sound of my heart pounding loudly in my ear like a drum. I could feel the tears rushing to my eyes, and running down my face, as the money that laid in my arms fell to the ground leaving a trail with each step I took. I tried to move my feet as fast as I could until I heard-"BANG". Would you die for the ones you love? Or let them suffer due to your mistakes? Welcome to my not so happily ever after.
