In Search of the Gentleman Thief
One of my favourite literary stock characters is that of the “gentleman thief.” The recent release of Lupin on Netflix shows that there are many others who are equally charmed by the concept. Who doesn’t love the idea of an outlaw, living by his own specific rules and meting out justice in a way that cuts the wealthy and powerful down to size.

One cop show after another
Cop shows. I grew up on cop shows. From Hill Street Blues to NYPD Blue, I loved them! I couldn’t get enough of them. Although Hill Street Blues was a really good show, I must say that there are some amazing cop shows that have happened in the last few years.

The Chris Watt Phenomenon
American murder: The family next door, took the world by storm. Documentaries are fan favourites on Netflix, and if you’re like me and you find yourself down the rabbit hole of YouTube crime documentaries and crime series every night, this documentary will make you very excited. The first time I actually came across Chris Watt’s case was on a YouTube channel that analyses the behaviour of suspects in police interviews from a psychological point of view. Their body languages, the time between responses and behaviour when the detectives leave the room are used to decipher if the suspect is guilty or not.

There’s a throwaway line midway through the scary-good Netflix exposé Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal that sums everything you ever wanted to know about college entrance scams but were afraid to ask. Somebody someone behind-the-scenes says a prominent Hollywood actress’ daughter had grades good enough to get into the college of her choice on her own merit, without her well-to-do mom intervening on her behalf by paying a scammy college admissions facilitator to game the system on her behalf.

The Prom Night Reaper
"We find the defendant Guilty of all charges." Those words have been repeated in my brain for the past seven years as I have sat in this cold, dark cell. According to the judge and my hometown, justice had been served; but, it most definitely had not. I didn't even know Mark Finch, Tom Harding, or Summer Stanton, let alone lure them into the woods, bind their hands and feet, and murder them execution style. I mean, that is simply too far outside of my skill set. Thankfully, my "atrocities and violence" had landed me here, on Death Row, alone in my cell awaiting the final appeals in my case to waste away. After seven years, with few personal interactions, I must admit that even I am questioning my innocence, trapped in my thoughts of how I stumbled across those three lifeless bodies in the woods that night, after sneaking back from an...engagement... with my girlfriend.

Ugly Intricacy
Gangsters and thugs wearing state-issued khakis or brand-name clothes. How about organized crime families, not with a Godfather calling shots but a Beast at the top of the food chain. Prison shankings on the cell block to gun battles in the city streets. Plots and schemes, blood and death, a life- or death-sentence of drama. If you like that, you probably have a twisted mentality hidden beneath the surface of a civilized person. Well, maybe not so much if you’re just living vicariously through the screen of your television. Then again, perhaps you’re a little bit bent in the psyche. As are us all!
