Chapter 4 Scammers inc. THE E-MAILS I felt elated. I had discovered the whereabouts of Cindy. The thought did run through my mind that perhaps the hotel Pudu front staff were part of the scam. But then I rationalized that the more people involved in a scam, the greater chance of it falling apart. Already involved was Kirk the banker, Benjamin Arnold the Lawyer, front desk staff of the Pudu hotel, and hotel management, and, of course, Cindy.

The Unsolved Disappearance of Sofia Juarez
Sofia Juarez was in an excited mood the evening of February 4, 2003. Her fifth birthday was the next day, and she was looking forward to opening her presents. She spent most of the night in her room playing with her Barbie dolls, but came out around 8:00 pm when she overheard her grandmother’s boyfriend, Jose Torres, say he had to run to a nearby convenience store. Sofia loved going places, so she asked her mother, Maria, if she could tag along with Jose. Maria agreed that she could go, and gave her a dollar so she could buy herself a treat. She helped Sofia tie her white Converse sneakers, gave her a hug, and told her to have fun. Sofia skipped happily out the door, clutching her dollar bill. It was the last time Maria would see her daughter.

“Ahhh. Tonight is the perfect night to open up this new bottle of Merlot. Special occasion be damned.” Josephine said aloud even though she was the only one currently in her one bedroom apartment. She drank the wine slowly allowing her to taste every bit of those crushed grapes. This past week was a frustrating and more than slightly unnerving one for her. It started so promising too. She had just started dating a really attractive man the week before who seemed to be such a gentleman; so unlike the last string of man child wannabe rock star divos who think they are God’s gift to women and she should consider herself lucky to be with them at all.

Who Really Killed Alabama Teens Tracie Hawlett and J.B. Beasley?
I recall being in high school and overhearing my mom and her friend discussing how two teenage girls had been murdered in a neighboring town. Murdered?? No one gets murdered here, especially two teenage girls. They were only a year older than me. It sounded like a story from the show Unsolved Mysteries, which was one of my favorites. Little did I know that it would later be featured on one of the hit show’s episodes.
