Early one Sunday morning around 5:00 a.m., I was DoorDashing in New Port Richey, Florida, just trying to earn money and mind my own business. The streets were mostly quiet, and I was focused on getting orders delivered safely and quickly.

As I approached a drive‑through, a car rushed through too fast for me to proceed. I had to brake suddenly to avoid a collision. After that, the situation escalated quickly. The vehicle began swerving left and right in front of me, creating a dangerous situation. Nearby, I noticed a silver Ford Explorer parked in the lot, with a white man standing outside.

GOT HIT IN THE HEAD AND EAR WITH A GUN

I honked my horn out of frustration and concern for safety. That’s when the encounter turned hostile. The man in the parking lot began shouting racial slurs at me and made violent threats. Moments later, people from the other vehicle joined in. Suddenly, I was facing two separate groups hurling racist insults and threats, including threats to kill me and graphic verbal harassment aimed at me and my family.

The situation moved from words to physical violence. I was approached aggressively and quickly found myself surrounded. I was outnumbered—about six or seven people—and forced to defend myself alone. During the attack, I was struck in the head with a gun.

VICTIM OF A HATE CRIME

I survived, but not without injury. I required eight stitches—four in my head—and was left with visible injuries from where I was hit. While my body healed, the emotional impact stayed with me much longer.

I share this story not to provoke anger, but to bring awareness. Racism and hate-fueled violence are real, and they don’t always happen in big public moments or on the news. Sometimes they happen early in the morning, in a parking lot, to someone just trying to work.

No one should fear for their life because of their race. No one should be attacked for honking a horn or simply existing. By telling my story, I hope to shed light on the reality of racial violence and encourage accountability, awareness, and change.
