March, March By The Chicks
We are only half-way through this year, but it is safe to say that history will remember this year in America for at least 2 major reasons (if not others to come). First, Covid-19, for all the reasons imaginable including government responses, economic repercussions, businesses shutting down, lock ins, and most significantly the deaths and illnesses. Secondly, the upwell in protest, both those surrounding racial injustice and inequity sparked by the killing of George Floyd in police custody and those sparked by other concerns that seem less important at this moment but seemed important to the people participating in them. It would be fitting then that the Anthem of the summer should be a protest song with a driving beat, strong lyrics, harmonies that rouse the spirit and a message of not backing down in face of adversity and opposition. At this moment, halfway through the year, March, March by The Chicks seems to be that song.

2020 song of the Year
If someone told me that they foreseen the things currently happening in 2020 would be taking place. From systemic racism , police brutality , a world wide pandemic and disunity within a nation as social injustices. To be honest , I probably would not have believed them.

It's a weird world. I can't think of a year that has felt more strange and out of rhythm than 2020. Every time it feels like we are catching our stride, something pushes us off balance. The twists and turns of this year have been tough, painful, hard fought and important. Sometimes though, all we can do is remind ourselves that it is a strange world, and we are doing the best that we can.

The Rising
When I wake up, each day is different. Ever since the beginning of March, it seems that the American life has spiraled down. I’ve opened my eyes and had to face losing countless things— some of those which are still hard to comprehend. Family members have passed due to a bewildering virus. I’ve lost my job and practice as a ballerina. I’m an extrovert, but also immunocompromised, so I no longer have the ability to connect and breathe the same air with friends as I once did on a daily routine. These routines that I once took for granted are so distant now. Ongoing systemic issues are now pressing matters as people can’t wait for change any longer. Progressive citizens are trying to understand the depths of vast corruption that our country shouldn’t have to face. It’s been said that America is the “land of the free, home of the brave.” Can that whole statement be true, especially when so much uncertainty and unrest is present in our society?

The above music was played in the Stephen King movie "The Stand", and I'm not sure how many of you are Stephen King junkies like I am, but if you are not, then I will give you a brief explanation. The Stand, is a story about good and evil, and about how a deadly virus escapes from a lab and begins infecting people all over the United States, and the panic and survival that ensues. I won't tell the rest of the story because it's a good read and may be something to read now, while we are all still quarantined.
