So... no one asked for this, but I'm writing it anyways.
As of right now (July 9, 1:43 AM), Monster was released 48 hours ago. You might be wondering, what is Monster? Why should I care? And how are those two women in that cover photo so breathtakingly beautiful? Well, let me answer all of those questions for you.
If you haven't been living completely under a rock, you know what K-pop is. For those of you that haven't, K-pop is Korean pop music. Featuring insanely synchronized dances, breathtaking music videos and concepts, and beautiful humans, K-pop is Western pop but just... 1000 times better (in my humble opinion).
So, to the questions.
What is Monster?
Monster is the debut song of Irene and Seulgi, a sub-unit of Red Velvet. Did that sound like a bunch of K-pop jargon to you? Let me rephrase. Red Velvet is a female K-pop band that debuted in 2014. It consists of members Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri.
Now, the concept of a sub-unit is a bit confusing if you are not used to it, but at its core, it's pretty simple. It's a smaller group formed from a larger group—in this case, the sub-unit is Irene and Seulgi, who are part of the larger group of Red Velvet.
Why Should I Care?
I'm gonna change your life real quick and attach the link to the music video. Monster is sexy, powerful, addicting, and makes you feel like a badass. The song has this addictive whine-like sound, with an amazing dance to match. The strength in their voices brings Monster to the next level, really selling the concept that they both are, indeed, monsters.
Give this song two to three listens before making a verdict on how you feel about it. Honestly, upon first listen I wasn't too impressed. But as the day went on, it had quickly gotten stuck in my head and I couldn't stop singing and attempting to dance to it.
How are those two women in that cover photo so breathtakingly beautiful?
Now this is truly one of life's greatest mysteries. If I knew, I would be a K-pop idol myself. I'll just follow in the footsteps of self-care Instagram threads and say: lots and lots and lots of water.
Well, that concludes my first post! I doubt anyone actually cares, but that's okay. This was fun to write, and if you made it to the end, I hope it was fun to read.
Signing off,
Pilar
